So the fact is that ps3 have been used as supercomputers ( the cluster of ps3, like 8 and 32 units of ps3) and that was the best deal for small companys who needed a server alike supercomputer. there was (or maybe still is) the Terrasoft Solutions who was making this kind of clusters of ps3 with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed.
Now news was what Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center were using networked PS3s to crack encrypted caches of child pornography. And now US Air Force said they been using network of 336 ps3 systems and going to add 2.200 more. The main reason for them to use ps3 was the cost. For example: a single 1U server configured with two 3.2GHz cell processors can cost up to $8K while two Sony PS3s cost approximately $600. And gap betwean performance is: a single 3.2 GHz cell processor can deliver over 200 gigaflops, whereas the Sony PS3 configuration delivers approximately 150 gigaflops. So the cost is 13,3(3) times more and performance only 25% less. Plus the size ps3 slim to compare to server computer. And maybe ps3 is more energy efficient.
If someone would said to me that game console would be used in these kind of places...

I think you can't use a regular PS3 for this. The US Department of Defense had a contract with the Sony when they built their PS3 cluster ;)
