Associated with him was the Advisor to His Excellency the President and Chairman ICTA, Professor P.W Apesinghe and the Director - General of TRCSL, Mr. Anusha Palpita.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px">This event was held at the TRCSL auditorium this morning with the participation of Chief Executive Officers from leading telecommunication companies, media and other distinguished guests. In his address Mr. Weeratunga stressed on the importance of high speed broadband and its role in overall ICT development in Sri Lanka, which in turn is contributing towards making Sri Lanka a wonder in Asia. Providing high speed Internet at a cost effective price to school children to improve their computer literacy skills and expand their knowledge was also highlighted by Mr. Weeratunga. While thanking broadband operators for their contributions Mr. Weeratunga urged the operators to increase their network coverage in the country and improve the quality of service thus enabling the public to reap the harvest of ICT.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px">Subscribers who visit the TRCSL’s website can now access the facility to check and verify the available speeds between the subscriber and the Internet. The entire system was developed based on the client-server application environment and offers the facility to the subscriber using two different locations in the world.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px">In this regard, two dedicated high-end servers in USA and Europe have been selected for the purpose of testing Internet speeds. Both the servers are located in data centers and linked to the Internet at the speed of 1Gbps. Unlike in other testing facilities, this tool is using a number of files in different sizes for download purposes.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px">The TRCSL achieves a unique honor in becoming the first regulator in the world to innovate and introduce such system in broadband speed testing. The other regulators offer speed testing facility only for local segments. The system developed by the TRCSL has been designed to measure the speeds between subscriber and a server in another part of the world, which is owned by the TRCSL. This is the significant difference between the local speed testing system and its foreign counterpart. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px">Internet users in Sri Lanka have gone through many hardships in testing their Internet connections to check available speeds. There were no facilities available for subscribers to check and verify whether the operators were providing the internet services at speeds advertised by them.
