    LAMPARD FEARS COLE LOSS

Manager of Chelsea Start of 09/10 Season. Click here to bet.

Frank Lampard fears the influence Lionel Messi will have on Chelsea's Champions League semi-final following the loss of Ashley Cole.

The Blues will renew their European rivalry with Messi's Barcelona after completing a 7-5 aggregate victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona are favourites for the tie with the first leg at the Nou Camp in a fortnight with Messi, the competition's top scorer, the pick of their frightening array of talent.

The Argentina playmaker has been compared to Diego Maradona and Lampard is concerned how Chelsea will cope with his threat in the absence of Cole, whose suspension has left the club without a recognised left-back.

"Losing Ashley is a huge blow. He has been absolutely outstanding this season," he said.

"Lionel Messi is the best player in the world by some distance at the moment and will be on the right wing. If you wanted anyone to play against him it would be Ash.

"Unfortunately he got a yellow card but we have to try and keep together, find someone to come in and do a good job against him for the team."

Chelsea and Barcelona have met eight times in the Champions League - with four of those matches staged in 2006 - since the turn of the century.

So far the series is even with three wins apiece and two draws but Barcelona are flying this season, six points clear at the summit of the Primera Liga and highly fancied to repeat their success of 1992 and 2006.

Lampard acknowledges Chelsea, who have conceded seven times in their last two matches following last night's enthralling 4-4 draw with Liverpool, must stop leaking goals if they are to prevail.

"We have to look back at the mistakes we make as a group in conceding goals. We have to be strong and we need to tighten up defensively," he said.

"If we are going to beat Barcelona we need to play at the level we achieved in the first leg against Liverpool when we won 3-1.

"It will be a very tough game because of the way they're playing, but we know what to expect, particularly in the away leg.

"Barcelona are probably favourites at the moment because of the way they're playing, but being favourites doesn't mean you go through.

"Barcelona are the form team in Europe, if not the world. They've been like that all season so there can't be a tougher match for us in this competition."

Lampard scored twice on a nailbiting night at Stamford Bridge, including the final goal that ultimately thwarted Liverpool's remarkable fightback.

"There were moments when I couldn't believe what was happening," said the England midfielder.

"We all had heart attacks on the pitch - as did both sets of staff and fans.

"It was real see-saw stuff. We were comfortable and then nearly out. It was a beautiful game in those terms.

"It was completely crazy. We didn't want it to be crazy - we wanted it to be much simpler than that.

"After half-time we showed great character and turned it round. We deserved to go through in the end."

FABIANSKI HOWLER HANDS IT TO CHELSEA

Lukasz Fabianski handed Chelsea an FA Cup final place as the Blues came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 in Saturday's semi at Wembley.

Fabianski put in an unconvincing display and it was his error with six minutes remaining that led to Didier Drogba's winner.

Theo Walcott had given Arsenal an early lead but the Blues levelled through Florent Malouda before the interval.

Chelsea had the better of the second period but failed to create a clear-cut opening until Fabianski's mistake condemned Arsene Wenger's side to a heartbreaking defeat.

Stand-in left-back Kieran Gibbs bailed Fabianski out of trouble as early as the third minute after the Polish keeper wandered needlessly out of his box and was beaten to the ball by Drogba. The Ivorian's header looked to be trickling into the bottom corner until Gibbs recovered to hook the ball off the line, much to the Polish stopper's relief.

Having rescued his side at one end, Gibbs then had a large part to play in his side's opening goal in the 18th minute. Having raced onto Emmanuel Adebayor's short pass, the youngster pulled the ball back for Walcott to volley home at the far post, with the ball taking a decisive nick off former Gunners defender Ashley Cole.

Malouda was narrowly off target three minutes later as the Blues immediately went in search of an equaliser, and it was the France winger who dragged his side level in the 32nd minute.

Frank Lampard's raking ball caught out Emmanuel Eboue, who allowed Malouda to cut inside before beating Fabianski at his near post.

Nicolas Anelka struck the foot of the post four minutes later after Abou Diaby was caught in possession while Lampard went close twice early in the second period.

Denilson was lucky to avoid a red card after putting his hands on referee Peter Walton while disputing a decision with 20 minutes remaining but despite retaining a full compliment of players, the Gunners fell behind with only seven minutes remaining when Fabianski failed to learn his earlier lesson.

Lampard's hopeful ball forward again tempted the Polish keeper out of his box and again he was too slow, as Drogba nipped in to round the stranded keeper before slotting into an empty net.

    Hiddink hails amazing Drogba

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink hailed Didier Drogba after another match-winning performance from the Ivory Coast striker.

Apparently set for the Stamford Bridge exit door this summer after ending last season on a low ebb with his Champions League dismissal in Moscow before falling out of favour with new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari this season, Drogba suddenly looks a man reborn.

The Ivorian has responded to Hiddink's arrival and even Arsene Wenger was forced to acknowledge the impact he made at Wembley, far beyond the 84th-minute winner that booked an FA Cup final appearance against either Manchester United or Everton on May 30.

And Hiddink weighed in with a special tribute of his own.

"It is amazing," said the Dutchman.

"Didier Drogba is playing a lot of games, every three or four days, and he is producing all the time.

"You do not just judge a striker by his goals. He can do a lot of other things for the team.

"But now Didier is scoring decisive goals in almost every game."

Far from the sullen, moody star Hiddink might have expected when he arrived to rescue the Blues from their alarming slump in February, Drogba presented a positive image.

Like most of the Chelsea players, he responded to the arrival of Hiddink on a short-term agreement with Russia, and the results are startling.

"I had no single criticism about his attitude from the first day I came," said Hiddink.

"What we made very clear was that we didn't want to give ourselves excuses but sometimes you have to do less to be more productive.

"Drogba was in a position of not playing frequently. It was logical that he would not be smiling every day.

"But you have to make a commitment to the team and that is exactly what he has done."

It was another reason for Wenger to regret not shelling out a paltry £100,000 to sign Drogba from Le Mans when he had the opportunity in 1998.

"Drogba is a killer," said the Arsenal boss.

"We made it a little bit easier for him but he never stops and is always focussed. Look at the number of goals he has scored in big games.

"He dives a little bit too much sometimes but he is a great player."

Wenger did however acknowledge Arsenal made life easier from Drogba than they needed to.

Chelsea had already dragged themselves level before half-time when Florent Malouda equalised Theo Walcott's early strike but extra-time seemed certain until man-of-the-match Frank Lampard launched a long ball downfield.

First Drogba shrugged off Mikael Silvestre before skipping round Lukasz Fabianski, who had needlessly charged to the edge of the area.

"Maybe this was not the best of days for Fabianski but I still believe he will be a great goalkeeper," said Wenger.

"We have to lift his confidence because he will feel guilty.

"But I don't want to blame any individual. We need to respond very quickly against Liverpool on Tuesday."

While Arsenal go away to lick their wounds, Chelsea know they have the perfect present to give Hiddink for his intended departure on May 31 in their grasp.

The Dutchman continues to insist he will not remain beyond the agreed date, although owner Roman Abramovich will surely attempt to find a compromise with the Russian football federation.

"I am enjoying myself very much," he said.

"I enjoy working with these players. There has been a very positive atmosphere since the day I arrived.

"I hope to leave on May 31 with a bottle of champagne, maybe even a crate if we win all three."

While all the talk has been of United's pursuit of multiple trophies and Liverpool's attempt to land a first Premier League title since 1990, Chelsea have quietly moved into contention for a treble.

But it seems Hiddink is intent on keeping his side under the radar just now.

"We can only go one step at once," he said.

"We have Barcelona in the Champions League and they are a beautiful team.

"In the Premier League the pressure is more on Liverpool than us because Manchester United are still in a luxurious position."
