True that they are not public sites. But it isn't that hard to access a VPN.

I mean, if a person knows how to retrieve data from a database of a website, then he/ she should know how to access a VPN too.

Moreover, eventhough the site is publicly accessible, the databases are not. There are several hardware firewalls and access layer filters.

Oh well... This is Sri Lanka. So be careful anyway. We never know about the level of security they have used.

And it is hard to create a fake country level domain.

Creating a .LK is not the same as creating a .COM domain. Most of the time, I would say more than 90%, country level domains are legitimate. Because they are administered by a authority within the country and it has a particular process to follow.

^^Yeah!

Will it leak valuable identity information

The site is not secured with appropriate certificate authority (no https). This can cause valuable identity information to be lost while transporting at packet level.

It could be at any hop between you and the computer(s) the defence department is using. Example if I register from my company and some one in my immediate computer network wants to get all such information they can use some thing similar to wire-shark and fiter the packets for this domain and use our identity.

Other side of the problem is what level of security defence department has put on our data, I was not doubtful that they secure until they asked to register out data using public domain (no https). Now I 'm more concerned that they have not thought enough about the identity theft threat.
