Wolverine - Old Man Logan

Old Man Logan

Old Man Logan is a character in an eight-issue story arc in ongoing comic book series Wolverine by the writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven that debuted with Wolverine #66 in June 2008. The story is set fifty-plus years in the future, after all superheroes have been defeated. Wolverine, now an old man, has set out on a journey with the now-blind Hawkeye across the barren, villain-ruled remains of the United States.

Millar, writer for the story, has said:
“ It's Dark Knight for Wolverine, essentially. The big, wide, show-stopping series that plays around with the most popular Marvel character of the last forty years, a dystopian vision of the Marvel Universe and a unique look at their futures. The heroes have gone, the villains have won and we're two generations away from the Marvel we know.

The first volume of the Ultimates, written by Millar and illustrated by Hitch, was published in limited series format and ran for twelve issues with production delays from March 2002 until April 2004. Hitch described the alternate-reality reimagining as one where, "You have to approach it as though nothing has happened before and tell the story fresh from the start.... A second series, also by Millar and Hitch and with similar production delays, was released as Ultimates 2 and ran for thirteen issues from December 2004 to May 2007.

In a December 2004 interview with PopCultureShock, Millar outlined the difference between the Ultimates and the Avengers: "The idea behind The Avengers is that the Marvel Universe's biggest players all get together and fight all the biggest supervillains they can't defeat individually, whereas Ultimates 2 is an exploration of what happens when a bunch of ordinary people are turned into super-soldiers and being groomed to fight the real-life war on terror."

This was followed by the one-shot Ultimate Saga (Nov. 2007), a condensed retelling, by writers C. B. Cebulski and Mindy Owens and artist Travis Charest, of the events of Ultimates and Ultimates 2. A third series, Ultimates 3 (Dec. 2007 - Sept. 2008) is written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Joe Madureira.

It was revealed at the 2008 at San Diego Comic Con that Mark Millar will write an ongoing series called Ultimate Avengers beginning in 2009. The series will be "event"-oriented, with a new major event every six issues, and a new artist illustrating each six-issue arc.
