The programme to establish ‘condom vending machines’ making it easy for members of the public to have access to condoms as a measure to prevent HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome), says the National STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)/AIDS Control Programme.
The Director of the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana explained that this measure is being taken in a bid to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The programme of establishing Smart Condom Vending Machines at public places was launched in the year 2017, however, the project stalled as a result of the economic crisis.
Although a shortage of condoms prevailed over the past 9 months, a total of 2 million condoms have been imported to Sri Lanka last week. Thus, they are now being distributed to the public free of charge through clinics.
Meanwhile, the World AIDS Day, the annual event which serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, and a rallying cry to continue working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat, falls on Friday (Dec. 01).
