Spooky Websites That Will Keep You Awake At Night

What are the things that creep you out and keep you awake at night? Bad movies? Ghost stories? Strange sounds outside your window? A spider crawling over your pillow next to your face? End of the world predictions? The future?
Some of the following spooky websites are good scary fun, others are quite serious in one way or the other. Consume with caution and don’t go to bed alone.
Ghosts & Ghost Stories

If you’re looking for scary videos, creepy pictures, or haunted stories, visit Ghosts and Ghost Stories because it is one spooky website has everything you need for a long, cold, and dark winter night.

Spooky02.png

Besides reviews of ghost-related games and movies, the site provides tons of material on ghosts, including pictures and videos. The most interesting section are the ghost stories. They are sorted into different categories. Under Classic Stories for example you will find the entire manuscript of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, while “Campfire Stories” contain short stories, including ones submitted by the site’s readers.

The Ghost Show

The Ghost Show is another spooky website that provides scary ghost pictures and their stories, information about haunted places, and details about the electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) or ghost voices. Unfortunately, it seems like the ghost videos site freaked out and ran away, the link leads into a dead nowhere.

Spooky03.png

Not scared, yet? Well, stop poking around the main menu and move down to the bottom of things. Watch the Scary Pop Ups videos or play the Scary Maze game. For the full creep factor, be sure to turn your sound on.

Apocalypse Soon

This is not another ghost stories page. Apocalypse Soon is dead serious. Are you a good Christian, a Jew, or a Gentile? Do you believe in the prophecies of the Bible?

Spooky04.png

Scary, isn’t it. But should we be worried for real?
Dianetics

The official Dianetics website is a visual pleasure. Beware! They will capture your attention with an advanced flash design, lock your interest with scientific argumentation to lure you into the Dianetics seminars, and finally reprogram your brain and make you a slave of the Scientology church sect. Don’t step into their traps
!
Spooky05.png
While “experts” are still arguing about ghosts and the apocalypse, Dianetics is real. Real creepy. And really messing people up.

Unlock The Block

00-finding-the-keys.jpg

The problem is, there are always some ‘good’ sites that also get blocked in the process. And it’s very annoying if you really do want to work but unable to access the necessary places.

Assuming that you are going to use it for a good cause, there are many solutions available on how to get past blocked sites, But you can’t get too many alternatives, can you?

This article will show you another way how to get past blocked sites. You’ll need your own domain hosted in a PHP-friendly hosting service and a script called PHProxy.

You can try to use a free web host for this purpose. The basic rule of thumb is, if the host can handle Wordpress, it can easily handle PHProxy. However, not all free hosting providers (are willing to) support this script.
How to Get Past Blocked Sites

After you download PHProxy, unzip it, then upload these three files: index.php, index.inc.php, and style.css to a directory in your site. You can use any existing directory in your site, but it’s preferable to create a new one.

01-Three-important-files.jpg

To upload files or create a directory, you can use any FTP client or use the online “File Manager” provided by your host. This is usually accessible via cPanel (and may have a different appearance depending on what kind of cPanel is used).

02a-Online-File-Manager.jpg

Inside the File Manager, choose “New dir

02b-New-dir.jpg

And then create a new directory by writing down the desired directory’s name and click the checkmark.

02c-Create-a-directory.jpg

Then choose the newly made directory to open it, and click the “Upload” button.
03a-Upload-file.jpg

Browse for the three files and add to the upload list. Click the green checkmark to upload them.

03b-Browse-for-files.jpg

And you are done.

Note: In some cases, you may have to create the new directory inside the “/htdocs” directory.
Using PHProxy

Using PHproxy to access blocked sites is very easy. All you’ve got to do is point your browser to: http://yourdomainname/the-new-directory-name/

If nothing goes wrong during the installation (read:uploading process), then you’ll see the following PHProxy display.

04-Using-PHProxy.jpg

Just put the address of the blocked site in the “Web Address” field and click “Go“.

3 Sites That Will Teach You How To Repair Your iPod

iFixit

As the screenshot below reveals, iFixit provides manuals for the iPod, iPhone and Mac. From the iPod product line the original device, the iPod Nano, iPod Mini, iPod Shuffle, and iPod Touch are covered, including different generations of each item.

iPodRepair02.png

Once you have tracked down your device, you’ll see an overview of available information.
The “Step-By-Step Guides” address specific issues and how to fix them.
The “Teardown” explains how to open your device and examine its inner beauty. This is also helpful if you need to replace single parts, for example the battery. Generally, each step of the guide also has user comments with questions or further information on what may or may not work as described.
“Related Questions” come from the “Answers” category of the website. If you’re having an issue that has not yet been described, you may find a hint in this section.
The “Troubleshooting” guides help you to track down the origin of your problem and finally you may need “Parts” to perform your own iPod repair. Here is a list of all Troubleshooting Guides.
ipodrepair

This site is mostly interested in selling you parts. However, they have produced PDF tutorials that show how to disassemble the iPod 3rd and 4th generation, the iPod Mini, and the iPhone 1st generation (2G) and 3G. A video is available for the iPhone 3G.

iPodRepair04.png

Sometimes it helps to consider several guides for the same procedure, as they may highlight different details in the text and images.
Do-it-yourself repair descriptions in pictures and text are all good. However, nothing beats a video, which reveals all the subtle details and difficulties of using tools and fixing devices.

ifixipodsfast

“I Fix iPods Fast” provides Video iPod repair Tutorials for the iPod Video, iPod Photo, iPod Mini, and iPod 3rd and 4th generation. More models are listed, but no videos are available, yet.

iPodRepair03.png

There is a list of available video tutorials in each iPod category and below each video you’ll find a summary of its content, a warning in case it’s especially difficult, and tools needed.
Further assistance may be provided at FixYa, a sited dedicated to free product support. You may also find help on wikiHow, Instructables, and YouTube.

Insert Random Quotes As Email Signatures [Windows]

There is something about random quotes that makes us pause and read them. Quotes and proverbs don’t need to condense the wisdom of the ages in a concise line. It’s not always wisdom; some adages are marked out by biting sarcasm too. But the moot truth is that it touches our thoughts or in some cases…a nerve.
We, who are literary or philosophically challenged often fall back on these borrowed words to decorate everything, from a conversation to a letter. It often helps to make light a dispiriting situation …
“It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours.” – Harry S Truman
Or to see the funnier side of love…
“The perfect love affair is one which is conducted entirely by post.” – G.B Shaw
That’s the whole point about quotes and sayings.

Being the attention grabber that it is, it makes sense to sprinkle it into the midst of our communication. And on the net, the most common form of chatter is email.
Quotes is a small utility which helps to us to sign off our emails with a flourish of wisdom.
The little tray application inserts random quotes at the end of email signatures. All the program settings can also be controlled via a right click on the tray icon.

Quotes_03.png
The freeware Quotes fun tool supports Outlook and Windows Mail/Outlook Express. Online email apps like Gmail or Yahoo aren’t left out. You can easily add a quote to your compose window using a hotkey. The default is Win Key + Q (the Win Key+hotkey combo is configurable from the settings page of the program).
The random quotes are retrieved by the program from an online database. Most of the settings for the program also reside online and that’s why a free sign-up is a first step. The collection of quotes is tagged and can be viewed by right clicking the icon and clicking on Browse Quotes.

Quotes_02.png
The user can subscribe to specific random quotes based on the tags. For instance, if you want to receive and use quotes only on ‘Technology’ or ‘Friendship’, the settings page is where you select the tags and subscribe to the quotes under it.

Quotes_04.png

Each user can also contribute random quotes and help to increase the collection. Quotes can be uploaded as single quotes or as entire text files using the site’s interface. Apart from the tags, each quote is rated by the users and in the Quote Settings page, higher rated quotes can be selected for display in the mail programs. Quotes can also be marked as private and these go into a private collection of the contributor.

Quotes_05.png

There is no detailed tutorial as such but the online video explains the whole setup from start to finish. This is where a detailed instruction set would have been helpful as configuring it to run with Outlook takes a bit of trial and error. The hotkey combo of course, runs without a hitch in all mail applications. The one thing to look out for is spelling errors in some of the user contributed quotations.
The little app may not be dramatically useful in a lot of ways except perhaps bumping up the fun quotient of your emails. In the end it’s really a fun tool that makes an email a bit more interesting.
Quotes is a 537KB free download and is supported on Windows XP and Vista.

AnyClip – Search and Watch Favorite Movie Scenes

moviestrip.jpg

As the end credits roll on and we exit the theater, what we usually carry with us are memorable movie scenes and catchy dialogues. With time, they become part of cinema folklore. Generations later, we still quote lines like – “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” (Gone with the Wind) or “Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” (Dirty Harry).
And that’s why we go back for re-runs on a DVD or on HBO. Or these days, we also hop onto the World Wide Web and scour some of our favorite video sites. to search movie scenes. A new startup website, AnyClip hopes to meet that need with the service it promises.

Sites like YouTube and MetaCafe host a huge assortment of movies and clips. But their sheer volume itself makes it difficult to fetch that defining moment from the scores of user generated video clips. Then again, our search may hand us spoofs and takeoffs. Though sometimes funny, it’s not the real deal.
This is where AnyClip comes in. The new startup (the developers call it a prototype) is designed to give movie lovers quick access to those unforgettable cinematic moments. You can rewind and reprise the exact scene without having to press the fast forward button on your DVD player or any streaming web player. AnyClip brings to the viewer not the entire film but only those talked about scenes that we continue to cherish.

AnyClip01.png

This is the heart of the reason for starting up AnyClip. Aaron Cohen, the CEO also talks of other very real commercial reasons at Why the World (Including Hollywood) Needs AnyClip.
As a member of the movie loving public, I am interested more in the ‘heart’ so I signed up to see if I could get any clip I want.
The sign up process is simple without any “verify your mail” links landing up in my inbox. And I went straight through to the site.
The web service has the Audience Award at TechCrunch50 on its shelf and at first glance it’s easy to see why. Apart from the usability and adding to it, the second reason has to be the easy-on-the-eyes design. The menus and sections are not crowded and it makes for a leisurely stroll through the site.
I can put in my search in the large search bar on top and select some choices (Movie, Actor, Director or Quote) from a dropdown. For wider browsing, I can click on any of the sections on top. For instance, I can even browse by type of scene – Laugh, Sing, Kill, Fear and Oh God!

AnyClip02.png
Clicking on any from the sections – Movies, Actors or Directors…takes us to the page where you can further browse to the video by its alphabetical title. If you can’t find the movie (quite possible now as the site is spanking new), put in a request using the Suggest a Movie text box.

AnyClip03.png

What about the video itself? You can click on Go to clip page and choose to watch the selected clip using the site’s web player. But if you are interested to watch the entire movie, the site connects to premium sites which are the legal distributors for the film like Netflix or the iTunes store. You can also order the DVD of the film from Amazon.

AnyClip04.png

But as it might be only the clip we are interested in watching, it’s the clip page we go to. The clip page is similar to any social media platform with sharing buttons and comments.
AnyClip05.png

The Promise Of Things To Come?

YouTube is still the favorite haunt for many movie lovers who search for movie scenes. But sites like AnyClip are starting to offer something different by focusing on quality rather than quantity. You might also have come across MovieClips in an earlier review. Both sites are similar on the surface, offering myriad ways to search for the right scene. MovieClips is a much older site and therefore has a larger database.
That’s where you might be disappointed with AnyClip right now. The selection of movies is…let’s say, quite selective with only a few early classics. These are very early days for the startup but unlike MovieClips, AnyClip is open to those outside the US and Canada. With AnyClip it’s not what is but what will be, that’s the part to look forward too.
If you like to go back to those cinema moments, do you think that AnyClip is a candidate as a standout web destination?

5 Cool Tips & Tricks In Windows Live MSN Messenger

5 Cool Tips & Tricks In Windows Live MSN Messenger

Windows Live Messenger, formally known has MSN Messenger (provided by Microsoft), has to be one of my favourite messaging clients. I am on it almost 24/7 and there are a few nifty features that make the experience a whole lot better.
This will be a two part post with the first part covering cool Windows Live tips and tricks that you can do without installing any add-ons, and the second part explains how you can make your Windows Live Messenger experience much more fun.
1. Remove Those Annoying Ads

You may noticed at the very bottom of the Windows Live Messenger main window, they show ads to you. However, if they slightly annoy you from time to time, here is a trick on how to block them.
On your Windows computer, open up Internet Explorer. Click on Tools, then select Internet Options. Click on the Security tab, click on Restricted sites, then click on the Sites button.
internet_options_restricted_sites.png

Then simply add the URL http://rad.msn.com. This serves as the Microsoft ad server and once you restrict this site, Windows Live Messenger will go from this:
msn_ads.png
to this:
msn_window_ad.png
2. See Which Contacts Haven’t Added You To Their Contact List

One of the most searched for keywords on my website is “how do I find out who blocked or deleted me on MSN”. It is really simple to find the answer and you don’t have to install any software on your computer or spy on your friends.
In Windows Live Messenger just go to Tools –> Options, go to the Privacy section, and underContact List, click on View. The list that is presented to you are all your contacts that have got you on their contact list. If a contact of yours is not on that list, they have either not added you or have deleted you because they don’t want to talk to you anymore – yes I know the feeling.
If going through that list will take a while, you can also download aMSN (which is a excellent portable MSN program for your USB drive). When you view your contacts, the contacts that do not have you on their list will have a red cross next to them.
amsn_contact_list.png
Another good thing is that you can send unlimited nudges to your friends.
3. Remote Assistance

MakeUseOf has covered many remote assistant applications such as Crossloop, Instant HouseCall, LogMeIn, uVNC, and Foldershare, but did you know Windows Live Messenger is another one? Just simply start a chat, select activities and click request remote assistance.
remote_assistance_msn1.png
Accept all the prompts, then the other person will be able to view your screen, and they can control your computer if you wish for them too.
remote_assistance_confirm.png

remote_view.png
If it doesn’t work, make sure “Allow Remote Assistance” is enabled by right clicking on My Computer, select properties, Remote, and tick the box.
4. Changing Your Display Name

Want to impress your friends and have a cool name and spell your name like Ĝмдїι.©ǾМ? Well, if you open up Microsoft Word for example, find some symbols that look like characters, or even change the font, you can then paste that text into your display name field on MSN. If you want, you can also draw images like these ones.
5. View Contacts By Email Address

You may notice that in the new version of Windows Live Messenger, there is no option to view contacts by email address. I for one, view all my contacts by email address as I know contacts cannot change it (unlike display names which some contacts change all the time). By viewing contacts by email address, I know I am talking to who I want to talk to.
If you are in the same situation as me, here is a workaround to view your contacts by email address. However, it may be a bit time consuming.
What you have to do is give all your contacts nicknames when they are online. Just right-click on the contact, select edit contact, and copy and paste their email address into the Nickname box.
email_address_nickname.png
Unfortunately it may take some time to do this for all your contacts, but this is the only and easiest way I have found to view contacts by email. If you know of another better way, please let me know.
Remember to keep an eye out for my next post. You will be having fun with audio, and keeping up with what your friends have been doing.
