Govt. agrees to CPC salary hike from November but unions want from January
Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) employees are to get a 22 per cent salary increase with effect from November this year. However, the increase will be paid in January 2010, says Petroleum Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie.
However, the trade unions have not agreed to this and demand that the increase be paid from January 2009 as per their agreement of a salary revision every three years. Trade union leaders say that their work-to-rule campaign will go ahead and till the government agrees to their demand.
The CPC trade unions engaged in a work to rule campaign demanding a salary hike. The campaign disrupted distribution of fuel in and around the city. A discussion with the Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera yesterday (Nov. 9) failed to yield results. However, the agreement for a 22 per cent increase was conveyed to this afternoon (Nov. 10).
When the talks failed last evening, panic buying created an artificial shortage at filling stations where long queues were seen since last evening.
