Short, sharp ICC Champions Trophy begins tomorrow in South Africa

Johannesburg, Sept 21 : Blink and you'll miss it. With 15 matches packed into two weeks of action, there's no time to settle into the ICC Champions Trophy gently.

he new-look event with just the best eight teams in the world at two venues in one destination begins tomorrow with host South Africa taking on ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 finalist Sri Lanka at Centurion.

A big crowd will be there to see if Graeme Smith and his men can take their first step towards repeating the achievement of the 1998 Proteas and lifting one of the biggest prizes in the game.

ICC President David Morgan is confident of the success of this year’s tournament.

“The ICC, having learned from past programming errors, has scheduled this year’s ICC Champions Trophy with a markedly different format from previous editions,” said Morgan.

“It involves the top eight-ranked sides, it is a short event lasting just 14 days and the prize money is four times what it was in 2006, totaling US$4million, which includes a cheque for US$2million for the winning team,” he said.

“I am grateful to the people from Cricket South Africa and the ICC for all their good work in putting this tournament together.

“I believe it will be a great success as the best players in the world demonstrate their skills in the 50-over format at international level. I have no doubt the matches will be played in a good spirit and I hope the best team wins.”

Meanwhile, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat has called on South Africa’s legendary sports-mad population to unfurl their flags and turn up in great numbers to the matches at the Wanderers and Centurion.

“This is one of cricket’s three ‘majors’ and with the various enhancements we have put in place, I am sure the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 will be exciting and remembered with great fondness by all those involved,” said Lorgat.
“It makes me proud, as a South African, to return here to stage this event. I know that the sports-loving people of my country will again be a key component in its success. Tickets have been priced very fairly and we are delighted with how rapidly they have been snapped up. Top players, great venues and enthusiastic South African fans – who could ask for more?”

For the first time the ICC CT will feature only the top eight-ranked sides in the world in the only global multi-team 50-over-a-side tournament between the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean and the next edition of that event, in the Asian sub-continent in two years’ time.

Those teams – Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, host South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies – have been divided into two pools of four, with the top two from each pool progressing to the semi-finals stage.

The action begins tomorrow (Tuesday) with the Proteas in action against Sri Lanka in a day-night encounter at Centurion (the location for the women’s world cup final of 2005) and it will end with a day-night final at the same venue on Monday 5 October.

KP in danger of missing South Africa tour

KP in danger of missing South Africa tour

    London, Sep.22 :
Kevin Pietersen is likely to miss England's tour to South Africa this November, as his chances of becoming match fit are remote.

Team director Andy Flower has conceded that KP may not be named in the England touring squad to be announced after the Champions Trophy.

Pietersen, who has undergone right Achilles tendon surgery, was ruled out of the final three Tests of the Ashes series.

The initial hope was that he would be out of action for only six weeks, but now, his recuperation could take as long as four months.

“We’re not sure whether he’s going to be fit or not. With the infection that he got initially and the subsequent lack of healing that has taken place since then, he had quite a horrible wound after the infection had taken hold. We’re still taking it day by day,” The Times quoted Flower, as saying.

England had originally intended to name the squads to tour South Africa tomorrow, but the announcement has been delayed until England’s involvement in the Champions Trophy ends.

CT success holds the fate of ODI's, feels Smith, Sangakkara

CT success holds the fate of ODI's, feels Smith, Sangakkara

Centurion, South Africa, Sep 22 : South Africa captain Graeme Smith and Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara both believes that in the wake of Twenty20's popularity, the success of Champions Trophy will decide the fate of ODI cricket as a viable format in international cricket

South Africa and Sri Lanka will play against each other in a Group B match as the eight-nation Champions Trophy will kick off here today.

''The ICC put a lot of effort into this tournament,'' Smith said.

''Ultimately it will be the cricket, how it is played, that will define whether this is a success or not. The good point is that it is short, to the point and can capture the imagination of fans around the world. That's the challenge ODIs have, with all the talk about moving domestic formats to 40 overs and all.

This is a crucial period for the ODI game and how this competition is a success on the field is more important than anything else,'' he added.

Of late the 50-over format has been severly criticised by former as well as current generation cricketers asking for tinkering with cureent ODI format to counter the growing popularity of Twenty 20 cricket.

ICC alo believes that in the shorter, sharper format - only eight teams, 15 matches and two venues - lies a future path of ODI prosperity.

''It's an important step,'' said Sangakkara.

''In the 2007 World Cup the cricket was great, but lots of people thought it was way too long, had too many teams and days between games. The true test of ODI is in big tournaments like this, the appeal to fans and players and how much money TV networks make from it. South Africa is a wonderful place to play and I think it will be a good tournament,'' he was qouted as saying by cricinfo.com.

Sangakkara further stressed that the right balance in all the three formats - Test, ODI and T20- will be key for the popularity of cricket.

''Everything should exist in harmony and balance,'' he said.

''We've got to find a solution, players, administrators and the public, where attention and import should be given to each format. Cricket started with Tests so we've got to maintain and protect its primacy but also ensure that the cash flows in and the fans have something to look at and enjoy,'' he added.

Australia will perform well in turning conditions, feels Ponting

Australia will perform well in turning conditions, feels Ponting

    Sydney, Sep 22
On a high after thrashing England 6-1 in seven match ODI series, Ricky Ponting feels that spinner friendly pitches in South Africa will does not pose a problem for Australia and asserted that the defending champions have enough arms and ammunition to tackle the turning conditions at the Champions Trophy, starting today.

''We've played the spinners really well in this series,'' Ponting said.

''I wouldn't expect the wickets in Johannesburg and Pretoria would spin as much as this one did today. Even if they do, we've got a number of players who have played well and performed well in spinning conditions,'' Ponting was qouted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.

England avoided the ignomity of becoming the first international side to lose a one-day series 7-0 by recording a four-wicket victory over Australia in the last match on sunday.

Spinner Graeme Swann proved the match-winner, taking five wickets for 28 runs from his 10 overs.

Australia, which is pitted in Group A along with India, Pakistan and West Indies, will start their campaign for title defence on September 26 against Caribbeans.

With most teams already in South Africa to play the eight-nation tournament, Australia and England will be late arrivals.

However, Ponting feels that lack of practise match before the tournament will not hamper Australia's chances as the world champions were preparing for the bienial tourney from last few weeks.

''In an ideal world, it would be nice to be there with all the other teams and get a game under your belt,'' Ponting said.

''Every other side has played a practice game, but we've known for a long time this is how it is so we've had one eye on our preparation for the Champions Trophy the last few weeks as well,'' he said.

''We've got to remain sharp and keep paying attention to the finer detail of everything we do.

''We're on the right track to doing that, so if we can do that when it matters in the Champions Trophy, I'll guarantee there will be a few sides scared of us if we make it through to the big games,'' he added.

Australia are a new-look squad to the one that won the Champions Trophy in 2006 in India, but Ponting has been refreshed by the new faces.

'''It does revitalise you to know you've got some excellent young guys that are waiting to explode on the international stage,'' he said.

The Champions Trophy features the world's top eight teams, split into two groups of four. The top two in each group progress to the semi-finals. The final is at Centurion on October 5.
