Gibbs to miss South Africa's opening game

2l9odxg.jpg

Herschelle Gibbs, the South Africa opener, will miss the opening game of the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka on September 22 because of a rib injury but is likely to recover in time for the rest of the games.

Gibbs picked up the injury during the warm-up game against West Indies on Friday after he took evasive action at the non-striker's end to avoid a straight drive from Graeme Smith. He retired hurt after scoring a 40-ball 38.

"Herschelle suffered a minor rib and intercostal injury in the warm-up match against the West Indies at Potchefstroom on Friday," Brandon Jackson, the South African physiotherapist said.

"We will reassess his position after Tuesday's match with the aim of getting him back on the field either for the New Zealand match on Thursday or the one against England next Sunday."

Australia target historic whitewash

28kj4sm.jpg

England are on the brink of an unwanted piece of history. No team has ever been whitewashed in a seven-match series and the fragile team faces a huge challenge to stave off Australia at Chester-le-Street. The margins have grown bigger throughout the series, reaching embarrassing levels at Trent Bridge when they were hammered by 111 runs on Thursday. Only the greatest optimist would give them a chance of claiming the final game.

Australia have moved though the gears impressively during the series with different players performing key roles in each game. Three days ago it was the turn of Tim Paine to make his mark with a maiden international hundred as he proves a more-than-able deputy for Brad Haddin. However, the difference between the sides was highlighted by Ricky Ponting's fielding, as the Australian captain twice pulling off stunning direct hits to remove Matt Prior and Ravi Bopara.

This match marks the end of England's longest home international season, which started way back on May 6 against West Indies. There has been the one major success in the summer of regaining the Ashes, but more than a fair share of shockers as well, including a Twenty20 defeat to Netherlands, the two-and-a-half day thrashing at Headingley and now these one-dayers. Victory here would only be the smallest crumb of comfort, but the beleaguered Andrew Strauss would accept anything right now.

And the day after this game is finished, both sides fly to South Africa for the Champions Trophy. The season is drawing to a close, but cricket doesn't stop.

Wright passed fit for Champions Trophy

Luke Wright, the England allrounder, has been passed fit for the Champions Trophy following a toe injury that ruled him out of the last three ODIs against Australia.

Wright was struck on the toe while facing the bowling machine at Loughborough ahead of the fifth match at Trent Bridge. He required stitches and was subsequently unavailable for the rest of the series with Dimitri Mascarenhas taking his place, but will now be on the plane to South Africa on Monday.

Wright is viewed a key member of England's one-day unit, providing hard-hitting batting in the middle order and lively pace bowling at various stages of the innings.

England have already needed to draft a replacement into their 15-man squad with Graham Onions being called up in place of Andrew Flintoff.

The tournament starts on September 22 with England's first match, against Sri Lanka, on Friday.

Tendulkar wants top spot for India to mark 20 years

2hwnzlx.jpg

Sachin Tendulkar is hoping he can mark his 20 years in international cricket by leading India to become the world's top ranked One-day team.

The premier batsman made his India debut as a 16-year-old against Pakistan in November 1989, since setting many batting records, including test and One-day aggregates and hundreds.

India enter the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa starting next week as strong contenders after staying unbeaten in One-day series over the past one year.

They are third in the ODI rankings, just one rating point behind world champions Australia and South Africa going into the premier eight-team event starting on Tuesday.

"We definitely have the ability, the spirit, the desire, the hunger to get there (number one team)," the 36-year-old former skipper said on Friday.

"Playing cricket for India means the world to me. I grew up dreaming about playing cricket for India. I am living my dream."

Tendulkar underlined his continued desire to excel, scoring his 44th One-day hundred last week to set up a tri-series final win over hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo.

"It is going to be a challenging season, a lot of cricket," he said. "I wish we had more test cricket, we only have three Test matches this season."

India's best performance in the Champions Trophy was finishing as joint winners in 2002 alongside hosts Sri Lanka.

"We have to see to it that we live up to the expectations of the entire nation and get to where we as a team have targeted," he said. "We want to be there at the top, just go out and give our best.

"We've been working towards it," he said. "If you look at our performances in the last couple of years, it has been terrific. A couple of hiccups here and there are always going to be there," he said. "It is never going to be a smooth journey. That is what keeps us together."
