'The number of people confirmed dead is 12,' police spokesman Colonel Abdallah bin Ali al-Harthi told state television. Cyclone Gonu kills three in Iran

Three people were killed in Iran's southern port of Bandar-e Jask when a river overflowing as a result of Cyclone Gonu caused their vehicle to overturn, an official in the city's transportation department was quoted as saying on state television's website.

News of the deaths came as tens of thousands of Iranians gathered in shelters to await a second onslaught of ferocious winds and driving rains. Cyclone Gonu hit Iran's southern coast late on Wednesday after arriving across the Strait of Hormuz from Oman, packing winds of 200 kilometres an hour and damaging some clay-built houses.
