to download movies/mp3s etc from desitorrents.com,
then continue reading. I am going to try to keep
it as simple as can be and give links from where
you can get more information, if you need it. But
everything you need to know to download from this
website is here.

1) INSTALL A BIT TORRENT CLIENT
A 'bit torrent client' is a program that you need
to have installed to download anything using
'torrents'. 'torrents' are small files that you
will find on this website that are used by the bit
torrent client to know which computers to connect
to get what you want. There are many clients that
you can use.

I suggest you use BitTorando (earlier called
shadow's experimental client)

Click on the download and then click on any of the
mirror links to start your download. Then install
it.

2) GO TO THE CORRECT FORUM
'Forum' is section under which users can
write/post threads with the torrent files
regarding a particular interest. 'Threads' are
messages like emails except other people can put
their reply under the same title/subject and so a
list of messages is formed called a 'thread'. On
desitorrents.com (when you click on Home) you will
find main categories like News, Movies, Music,
etc. Under these are two sections - _______
Releases & ______ requests & _______ discussions.
To find something to download click on the links
listed under Releases - sub-forums to see the list
of threads. Now you can see what has been
posted/made available by other users. Click on
thread that interest you. New releases/active
threads are listed first, by default.
Beside the releases, other links are forums about
that section (movie, music etc). So if you want
something that’s not available make a request in
the request forum. To talk about something use the
discussion forums.
NOTE - There are separate forums for releases,
requests and discussions. Please use your common
sense and put your posts under the right forum.
Otherwise there are users on this website called
'Moderators' (gods!) that will delete/move your
posts while other people get mad at you.

3) AFTER FINDING THE THREAD
Now almost always under the release forums, the
first message in a thread will detail information
about the release like for a movie - what format
it is, how big is it etc. Then under the 'attached
files' will be a _____.torrent file. Once you
click on this file, a small file will be
downloaded and opened by your bit torrent client
automatically. Select the folder/place where you
want to save the file and click ok. Now begins the
actual download process. If you are downloading a
movie it might take a really long time so minimize
it and let it do its stuff (note read the next
point to download fast). Remember to select the
correct connection type in 'settings for' in bit
torrando, so that your upload speed is not too
high.
Keeping the upload speed slightly less(1-3 kb)
than your full upload speed is the best setting.
Once you download completes, the cancel button
will change to 'finish'. Clicking finish will
close your bit torrent client. But DONT click
'finish' once your download reaches 100% if you
have not uploaded as much as you download. You can
see your share rating in bit torrando , keep it
running at least until u reach 1. You can start
watching your movie/playing your mp3 etc once your
download completes without clicking 'finish'.
Read on to know why not to click 'finish' and how
to play the movies/mp3.
NOTE - If you get disconnected or cancel your
download (because u have to shut down ur computer
or something) then all you have to do to resume
your download (continue from u where u stopped).
To do so click on the same torrent file in the
thread AND select the same place on your computer
where u had initially started saving it. The
download will automatically continue after
checking what you have already downloaded.

4) REALLY USEFUL INFORMATION (download faster,
avoid common problems)
Once your download begins look at the little light
that is shown by bit torando. If it’s green, then
skip this section. If it’s yellow, then your
download will be very slow unless you 'open
ports'. This is a bit hard to explain how to do
here. Basically if you’re using a LAN network or
connected to the internet via firewall then you
need to make changes to your settings to get good

If the light is blue, that means that no one you
are connected to has the complete file. This
implies that there is a chance your download will
never complete, although this rarely happens when
the thread is fairly new (generally if today's
date is within 1-2 weeks of the first post). You
should check under the statistics (click on the
'+') of the first post to see how many users are
connected and how much they have left. If you
start downloading something and get stuck (not
make any progress for few hours), then reply to
the same thread and request for someone to 'seed'
the torrent. Usually, someone will see your
message in 1-2 days and agree to seed it for few
hrs, keep your torrent running during this period
as this might happen any time. Try not to download
torrents which are more than 1 month old as the
chances of getting stuck are higher. Sometimes,
this will happen if the person who has posted the
torrent and is 'super seeding' it.
'Super seed' is a special mode that is used by the
original releaser, to help u get the file faster,
in this case u will not see a seed but this is
always told by the user if he is super seeding.
Also, the way bit torrent work is one file is
split up into many parts. These parts are then
randomly distributed among different users by
initial seeder (the person who already has the
file). Later, these parts are exchanged by these
users to get the complete file. So if a file has
10 parts and u manage to download 2 parts, you
should starting sending these parts to the other
users so that they also have these 2 parts and you
will continue to get the other parts from these
users. This is all done automatically by your bit
torrent client as long as your connection is setup
properly and you don’t set it to be too low.
If you’re still getting slow speeds, then it might
be your upload speed is slow. The way bit torrent
was designed was that if you are uploading slowly
then u cannot download too fast. Both your speeds
are usually proportional (not equal! but there
will be relation between the two). Sometimes, your
download speed may be slow because the torrent has
just been posted in the forum. Obviously, if its a
new file it will take some time for everyone to
get it, so be patient.
Bit torrent is like a community. You are
downloading your movie/mp3 from other people like
you. So if you don’t upload then other people will
get file slowly and since your downloading parts
from them your speed will also become slower. So
please keep uploading how much ever u can. Every 1
kb makes a difference. Also DONT click 'finish' as
soon as your download reaches 100% if you have not
uploaded as much as you download. In fact, keep
uploading for as long as you can because you will
help other people get the same file u just
downloaded. You can start using the file you
downloaded once it completes without clicking
'finish'. Just minimize and feel happy your doing
your part in this community.
Note - If you don’t upload as much as u download,
you will be considered a 'leecher'. Leech is a
blood sucking little animal, and by only
downloading and not uploading your selfishness is
hurting the rest of us.
PLEASE upload for as long as you can. Also keep an
eye on the threads from which you have downloaded,
other users some times get part of the file before
everyone with the file closes the torrent. They
will request in the thread for someone to help
them by seeding the torrent. All u need to do to
help them is to click on that same old torrent
file in the thread and select the location where
you have saved the file. After checking the file,
your client will automatically start sending parts
of the file that those other people need. Let it
run till there are other seeders and be happy that
you've helped other people and congrats you are
now 'seeding' and considered a 'seeder' (the good
guys!)

5) WATCHING MOVIES
Different users release movies in different
'formats'. 'format' is like the language that the
movie is written (not the audio language or the
subtitles!). For your computer to show you the
movie it must be able to understand the movie
file. There are many small free things ('codecs')
you can download to play the movies. Instead of
telling u different codecs to download for every
format available on this site, I am going to give
u a silver bullet - K-lite codec pack

This has also the codecs u are likely to need to
play the movies (*.avi,*.wma,*.ogm ,*.mpg) . after
installing this u can use the player that comes
with it or windows media player or this website's
fav - VLC (video LAN player) by downloading it
from here. You should always try to play your
movie using VLC (After installing the codec pack)
before posting about your problems.

Now this takes of movie formats like divx, xvid,
wma, ogm etc.
Sometimes movies will be released as .iso or .nrg
files. These are not movie files but CD image
files. These files are used to write/burn your
movie on to a CD. To play the movie you need
either burn the CD or use Daemon tools.

This will create a virtual (fake) CD drive that
will show in your 'my computer', after installing
it. Now click on the lighting logo in your system
tray (near the volume control) and click on the
drive shown there, then select the .iso file that
you downloaded. Now you can play your movie like
you do for a vcd. open your media player and go to
the CD drive that has this fake CD and inside
MPEGAV you will find .dat files. Play these to see
your movie.
