Dick Cheney and US Ambassador to Sri Lanka attacked by two separate terrorist groups Tue, 2007-02-27 19:38 Colombo, 27 February, (Asiantribune.com): US Vice-President Dick Cheney in Kabul, Afghanistan and US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Robert O’Blake were targeted by Taleban and Tamil Tigers respectively in two separate attacks today. The Taleban suicide bomber who aimed to get Cheney missed him by quite distance, according to military sources. But O’Blake narrowly missed serious injuries when the helicopter carrying him and other Western diplomats came under Tiger fire. Both terrorist groups – Taleban and Tamil Tigers -- admitted responsibility for their attacks. An anonymous Taleban acknowledged responsibility saying that their target was Cheney. The Tigerr Secretariat in Killinochchi accepted responsibility but added that their target was not the Western diplomats. They blamed the Sri Lankan government for not informing them of the visit of the diplomats. However, informed sources said that Tigers, who monitor movements of all dignitaries with a well-knit intelligence apparatus, would have been aware of the arrival of the diplomats. These sources maintained that the Tigers deliberately took a calculated risk in the mortar attack (1) to impress the Western diplomats that they are still operative in the east despite the Government’s claim of driving the Tigers out of the east; (2) to blame the Sri Lankan government for not informing them of the arrival of Western diplomats and (3) to force the Western governments to acknowledge them as a force that cannot be defeated. Cheney was on an unannounced visit to Kabul when the Taleban terrorists targeted Afghanistan’s main US base. It was also a calculated move to signal that they can hit the high security US bases, particularly when US Vice-President was in town. US Ambassador Robert O Blake was injured slightly when the Tamil Tigers launched a mortar attack on Batticoloa Weber Stadium after the helicopter carrying Western ambassadors landed. US embassy said that the O’ Blake was “alright”. The Italian Ambassador Pio Mariano, who received minor head injury, was airlifted to Colombo. They were accompanied by Minister for Disaster Management, Mahinda Samarasinghe. He escaped unhurt. - Asian Tribune - Show's the hallmarks of a co-ordinated hit.
