If chief selector Ashantha de Mel is to be believed dashing middle order batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan in most probability will be paired up with veteran Sanath Jayasuriya to open the innings.
Dilshan, after being left out from the Zimbabwe tour, bludgeoned back to back centuries in Tests against Bangladesh that earned him a recall to the ODI squad.
“Opening with Dilshan seems to be a good option,” De Mel said.
“I had a chat with him and he is willing to open the innings.”
Struggling opener Upul Tharanga will have to sit out if Dilshan, a veteran of 152 ODIs, makes it to the top.
Asked as to why the selectors didn’t consider the 32-year-old for Bangladesh tri-series, De Mel said they wanted to try out some young ones against weaker opposition like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
“We dropped him for poor form (in September 2008); we expected him to bat longer but that didn’t happen. I think being out of the team has done worlds of good to him. Now he seems to be in good form.”
