At its best, the Romantics' self-titled debut album sounds like the greatest album Shel Talmy never produced. The Detroit band's British Invasion-style power pop may not have been an especially original creation, but it was good enough that no one with a taste for high-voltage hooks would ever dream of complaining, and as a meeting of mid-'60s style and late-'70s volume and passion, it's all but flawless. The original songs, written by guitarists Wally Palmar and Mike Skill and drummer Jimmy Marinos, are a glorious pastiche of period pop styles (think the Kinks and the Easybeats with a bit of the Hollies thrown in for melodic appeal) played with a hard-stomping energy and a genuine love for the vintage style that doesn't reek of nostalgia. The production by Peter Solley is simple but smart enough to put both the hooks at the energy up front where they belong, and the Romantics never had a set of tunes this strong again; "What I Like About You" richly deserved its status as a hit single, and "When I Look in Your Eyes," "Tell It to Carrie" and "Girl Next Door" would have followed it up the charts in a just world. the Romantics didn't exactly reinvent the wheel with this album, but they sure knew how to make it roll, and for sheer party enhancing energy, this album is hard to beat.

The Yardbirds are an English rock band that had a string of hits in the mid 1960s, including "For Your Love", "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Heart Full of Soul". The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top fifteen of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list (Clapton as #4, Page as #9, and Beck as #14). A blues-based band that broadened its range into pop and rock, The Yardbirds were pioneers in guitar innovations of the '60s: fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, backwards echo, improved amplification, etc. Pat Pemberton, writing for Spinner, holds that the Yardbirds were "the most impressive guitar band in rock music". After the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, their current lead guitarist Jimmy Page founded what became Led Zeppelin.
The bulk of the band's most successful self-written songs came from bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith who, with singer/harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja, constituted the core of the group. The band reformed in the 1990s, featuring McCarty, Dreja and new members. The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Live from Toronto is a live album by The Who recorded during the last concert of the It's Hard Tour at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, 17 December 1982.
It have the same mix as video soundtrack of The Who Rocks America (vs. the nice bonus track remixed versions on the 1987 It's Hard reissue). While the sound is fairly clear, it sounds like a slightly duller dub off of the video soundtrack.

While occasionally maligned, Thelonious Monk's '60s recordings for Columbia yielded many moments of warmth and ingenuity. His first two albums for the label, Monk's Dream and Criss-Cross, rank among his very best; the latter demonstrated the company's success in raising his profile, becoming in 1963 his sole LP to place on the pop charts. This three-CD box, like the 2000 collection of Prestige sessions, aims to push Monk's '60s music into the spotlight shared by his Blue Note and Riverside classics. While deviled by a handful of questionable choices, The Columbia Years for the most part succeeds.
As Peter Keepnews's liner notes point out, Monk spent an inordinate amount of his time at Columbia rerecording his established repertoire, dipping into not only his own stock of compositions, but favorite standards such as "April in Paris." Often supported by the excellent likes of saxophonist Charlie Rouse and drummer Ben Riley, Monk made trio and quartet versions of such classics into keepers. He also continued his sporadic work with larger groups in settings both sublime (the performances here of "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," recorded during the 1967 European tour captured in the documentary Straight, No Chaser) and misguided (the Oliver Nelson-led Monk's Blues sessions that nonetheless supply this set's lovely, bracing "Reflections").
Unfortunately, in concentrating on Monk's best-known titles, The Columbia Years misses his more than worthwhile forays off the beaten path. The pianist's reading of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" (from the '67 Straight, No Chaser disc), for instance, is one of his slyest, most musically complete stretchings of a theme; ranging from stately to a stride-like bounce over nearly eight minutes, it would have proved the centerpiece of the box. The inclusion of a listless alternate take of "Honeysuckle Rose" near the end of disc 1 also baffles.
Still, The Columbia Years mostly dazzles, with Monk reveling in his heightened fame and, of course, his music. Listen long before deriding the best of the work here: it's the sound of one of America's greatest musician-composers continuing to challenge himself on his own terms. --Rickey Wright
Disc One centers on reissued studio sessions in trio and quartet format. At the piano, Monk thrills with his use of unique tone clusters and devil-may-care keyboard rants. There?s always a high level of energy, even though the tempo varies from a slow and deliberate ?Pannonica? to a jumpin? and jivin? ?In Walked Bud.? Jon Hendricks parades both lyrics and scat singing proudly around the classic tune.
Disc Two combines big bands in both studio and live sessions with solo piano and quartet segments in concert. Monk?s piano work stands apart as powerfully percussive and full of vigor. The take presented here of ?Blue Monk? with studio big band swings with passion and heats up considerably. Soloist Rouse is in fine form. It?s a different take than that released in 1994 on the CD reissue of Monk?s Blues. From a 1967 solo piano concert performance in Puebla, Mexico, Monk performs ?Don?t Blame Me? with deliberately slow and meaningful expression. ?I Mean You? is from Columbia?s 1963 LP Big Band And Quartet In Concert, also released on CD in ?94 by Sony. Thad Jones, Charlie Rouse, Frankie Dunlop and Phil Woods contribute exciting solos alongside Monk?s fresh performance.
Disc Three offers live Monk performances in concert and club settings, with both small and large ensembles. At the Newport Jazz Festival with Pee Wee Russell, and at the Monterey Jazz Festival with a nonet, Monk and Rouse swing heartily. In Stockholm, Monk is with a small ensemble that includes Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods and Ray Copeland. At the It club in Los Angeles, he?s in vintage form with Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley.

Tina Charles (born Tina Hoskins, 10 March 1954, Whitechapel, London) is an English singer, who achieved success as a disco artist in the mid to late 1970s. She is best known for her 1976 #1 hit "I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)". Her chosen stage name of Charles was a tribute to her father, Charles Hoskins.

Career
Charles began her career as a backing singer and session musician, and recorded her first solo single in 1969 with a then unknown Elton John singing backing vocals. During the early 1970s she supplied vocals for the Top of the Pops album series. In 1971 she made appearances in the first series of The Two Ronnies, the BBC One sketch show starring Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett.
In 1975 Charles and her friend Linda Lewis were backing vocalists on the Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel chart topping song, "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)". She provided the lead vocals for 5000 Volts' 1975 disco hit single "I'm On Fire". Although not publicly acknowledged as a group member at the time, Charles was considered to have a stronger voice than the group's official lead singer. The song reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart, and 26 in the Billboard Hot 100.
Charles' big break came in 1975, when Indian-British music composer and record producer Biddu, who had just enjoyed massive success worldwide writing the disco hit "Kung Fu Fighting" for Carl Douglas, produced the single "I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)" for her. The single spent three weeks at number one on the UK chart in March 1976, and was a major hit around the world. Biddu's collaboration continued on a future album and another song hit: "Dance Little Lady Dance". In total, Charles spent 42 weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1976 alone, mainly due to these two songs.
Further hits like "Love Me Like a Lover", "Dr Love", "Rendezvous" and "Love Bug" made her a pop star throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, but she was never able to achieve success in the US. Her only solo recording to chart significantly in the US was "You Set My Heart on Fire," which reached number 3 on Record World's 'Disco File Top 20' chart in the autumn of 1975.
In 1978, Charles was a joint winner at the World Popular Song Festival held in Tokyo, performing the tune, "Love Rocks". Charles represented the UK, and shared the top prize with Japan's own entry.
By 1980 her career was in decline, and disco music generally was losing some of its public appeal. She attempted to change her disco style for her 1980 album Just One Smile for a more hard edge rock electronic style but the album was virtually ignored. Charles married and had a child, and devoted herself for some years to her family life, putting her singing career on the back burner. In the mid 1980s she had a resurgence with a remix of "I Love to Love" which was produced by Sanny X.
Since 2000, Charles has performed throughout Europe where disco music and her hit singles have been reappraised, and she has become a popular live performer. Charles featured in the Top 5 of the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with "Higher" in 2006. The song is produced by longtime friend and associate Sanny X. She made a guest appearance with The Producers at their 2007 concert, singing "Slave to the Rhythm". In October 2007, Charles recorded "Hide and Seek" with producer Ian Levine for the album Disco 2008. Her latest album, Listen 2 the Music was released in March 2008.
On 16 April 2010, it was announcd that Charles had been back in the studio working on new material with the producers, Dave Ford, Ian Curnow and Carl M Cox, including a remake of "I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)"

Personal life
Born to the actor Charles Hoskins and his wife Hilda, Charles recovered from meningitis as a newborn. She has a brother, Warren. On launching her music career she did not use her real name, Hoskins, since this could have caused confusion with Mary Hopkin, better known at the time. She chose Charles since it was her father's name.
Charles was married to Bernard Webb, and had a son Max, born in London in 1977. She was divorced in 1979. She re-married in 1993 to her second husband Tetoo. They live in Surrey, England.
