The U.K.'s BGO Records reissues three Al di Meola mid-'80s albums on a pair of CDs. First is the nearly smooth jazz Soaring Through a Dream released originally on EMI's Manhattan imprint in 1985 -- this album was an attempt by the great guitarist to score a hit single or two on the then-newly formed smooth jazz radio format.
Next is the lightweight acoustic set Cielo e Terra, released during the same year, that is easily the best in this bunch, as it .contains a couple of fine tines such as the title track and "Atavism of Twilight." Finally, the 1987 offering, Tirami Su, was a half-hearted attempt by the guitarist to return to fusion -- the very thing that had established his reputation in the first place. A motley collection to be sure.

After a journey busking the streets of Europe to Les Cousins Club Soho 1965 via The Hyde Park, Knebworth and Glastonbury Festivals, The Festival and Albert Halls ? we arrive early April 2011 at Metropolis Studios Chiswick with one hundred and twenty guests and the one and only Roy Harper. A breathtaking performance left all who were there drained and mesmerised. Simply unrepeatable, and caught on camera. The DVD includes an interview. Roy Harper - an idiosyncratic British singer/songwriter acclaimed for his deeply personal, poetic lyrics and unique guitar work, was born June 12, 1941, in Manchester, England. As a teen he tenured with De Boys, his brothers' skiffle band, before leaving home at the age of 15 to enter the Royal Air Force; he subsequently secured a discharge by faking insanity, resulting in a short stay in a mental institution (where he was the subject of an ECT treatment). His rebellious attitude eventually led to him spending a few months in prison. Harper later drifted throughout Europe, and by 1965 was a mainstay of London's Les Cousins folk club, performing alongside the likes of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Nick Drake.

Trombonist Curtis Fuller, who developed his sound out of the style of J.J. Johnson, recorded prolifically as a leader from 1957-1962. After recording three dates for Prestige and New Jazz within a seven-day period in 1957, Fuller made four albums for Blue Note from 1957-1958, and after three albums for Savoy, he cut a lone session for United Artists in 1959. All of the five Blue Note and United Artists records (plus an alternate take of "Down Home") are on this excellent three-CD limited box set, released in 1996. Fuller is heard with four different quintets that include either tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, baritonist Tate Houston, trumpeter Art Farmer, or (on a date only previously out in Japan) fellow trombonist Slide Hampton; the rhythm sections consist of either Bobby Timmons or Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers or George Tucker on bass, and Art Taylor, Louis Hayes, or Charlie Persip in the drum slot. In addition, there is a sextet session with Lee Morgan, Mobley, Tommy Flanagan, Chambers, and Elvin Jones that has arrangements by Gigi Gryce and Benny Golson. Throughout, the music is high-quality hard bop with plenty of fine features for the underrated but talented Curtis Fuller.

The Paris Jazz Festival is a tradition in the jazz concert calendar with artists from around the world delighted to accept an invitation to perform.
The unique 1987 Paris Jazz Festival series not only captures some of jazz's finest innovators in concert but also the rehearsals for this prestigious event and candid backstage interviews with the artists. Swiss drummer Daniel Humair has worked with the best American and European jazz musicians. He quickly became a staple among European drummers, first in a bop style, then adopting the sophistication of West Coast drummers such as Shelly Manne and later absorbing Elvin Jones' influence.
Despite an early but less than encouraging introduction to music, Humair only got interested in this art form when he reached 14 and heard a recording by Tommy Ladnier and Mezz Mezzrow. Working tremendously hard to make up for the lost time, he rapidly became a professional musician and started to perform in ballrooms. In 1958, he won several awards at the Zurich Jazz Festival. This recognition led to his first European tours with Don Byas, Guy Lafitte, Jacques Pelzer, and Floris Nico Bunink. In November 1958, he moved from Belgium to Paris at the invitation of Barney Wilen. There, he worked with Lucky Thompson, Oscar Pettiford, Bud Powell, and vibist Michel Hausser, with whom he made his first recordings. Subsequently, he joined Martial Solal's trio and stayed with the pianist until 1965. This significant collaboration helped him develop his sound and improve his arranging skills. During that time, he also worked as a sideman with a lot of American musicians passing through Paris and collaborated with two of the most important French jazz musicians of the era: pianist Rene Urtreger and bassist Pierre Michelot. In the mid-'60s, he formed a unique trio with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and organist Eddy Louiss. In 1968, his career took a critical turn with the beginning of his four-year tenure with Phil Woods & His European Rhythm Machine. Following this experience, he played in a trio with pianist Gordon Beck and bassist Ron Matthewson.
During the '70s, he most notably appeared with various editions of the Michel Portal Unit. At the end of the '70s, he created another trio with saxophonist Francois Jeanneau and bassist Henri Texier. The combo helped give a new direction to the French jazz scene by developing a local repertoire still rooted in the jazz tradition but taking its distance from the American model. In 1985, another important step in the drummer's evolution was his association with Joachim Kuhn and Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark. The trio remained active until the untimely passing of Jenny-Clark and helped him mature as a composer. In the '90s, he decided to focus on his activities as a painter, which started to influence his drumming, helping him to work on textures and better define the relationship between the drums and the other instruments. This did not prevent him from remaining present on the jazz scene. Under the moniker Reunion, he invited various soloists to perform with him. Other highlights include his participation in an all-star quartet with Enrico Rava, Miroslav Vitous, and Franco d'Andrea, and the creation of a trio with Bruno Chevillon and Marc Ducret. In 2001, he launched Baby Boom, a project involving much younger musicians.
