Of all the Mamas and Papas, Cass Elliot was the best poised for solo stardom. After all, she had That Voice,
and a command of musical styles reaching back into Tin Pan Alley. And while she was the first of the band
out of the chute with a solo album, she sort of eased into it with the other Mama and Papas backing her on
?Dream A Little Dream Of Me.?
In the three years she was a solo artist for ABC/Dunhill, she released two albums (Dream A Little Dream Of
Me and Bubble Gum, Lemonade And? Something for Mama, later retitled Make Your Own Kind Of Music) and a
handful of singles, all of which are included on The Complete Cass Elliot Solo Collection 1968-1971.
During our excursions in the vaults, we came across three tracks that had never been released in any form:
Cass? cover of Joni Mitchell?s ?Sisotowbell Lane,? a version of John Sebastian?s ?Darling Be Home Soon,? and
the Cashman, Pistilli & West tune ?For As Long As You Need Me.? They are revelatory, and stand proudly with
anything Cass released.
Cass? daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, contributed notes for the release and participated throughout the project.
Rock historian (and Hip-O Select go-to guy) Richard Campbell performed copious feats of discographical and
biographical research in support of his extensive liners, and all the tracks were newly mastered from the
original tapes by Erick Labson of Universal Mastering West. Also, props to photographer Henry Diltz for finding
such great photos of Cass; the package really looks as good as it sounds.

Celine Marie Claudette Dion born March 30, 1968), is a Canadian singer. Born to a large family from Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband Rene Angelil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the English-language album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angelil, she achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history. However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a hiatus from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed a three-year (later extended to almost five years) contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
Dion's music has been influenced by genres ranging from rock and R&B to gospel and classical. While her releases have often received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled and powerful vocals. Dion is the best-selling Canadian artist of all time, is the second best-selling female artist in the US during the Nielsen SoundScan era, and is the only female artist to have two singles sell more than a million copies in the UK. In addition, her 1995 album D'eux, is the best-selling French-language album of all time. In 2004, after surpassing 175 million in album sales worldwide, she was presented with the Chopard Diamond Award at the World Music Awards for becoming the best-selling female artist of all time. According to Sony Music Entertainment, Dion has sold over 200 million albums worldwide.

In the 1970's, the trumpeter Charles Tolliver was a righteous force in New York straight-ahead jazz. He pushed his energy to sustain sets of long, wending tunes with his quartet, which didn't include another horn player. The music -- created in tandem with the pianist Stanley Cowell -- was based on middle-period Coltrane: dark, modal, hard-driving, springy. Mr. Tolliver released it on his own label, Strata-East, setting an early and effective example of self-reliance in the jazz business. This set collects three out-of-print albums from Strata-East from 1970 to 1973, recorded live at Slugs' in New York and at a concert hall in Tokyo, and they're hard bop with a vengeance.
?Musically, the question on the table for Tolliver's generation at the dawn of Strata-East's inception was deciding what parts of bebop tradition remained visible in an age set on fire by Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra. As can be heard on this and his other Strata-East releases, Tolliver's Music Inc group proposed clear answers to such questions, with meaty and melodious playing that celebrated the classical virtues of swing, virtuosity and the unbridled expressionism and spontaneity that were the 60's stock-in-trade. Call it a case of eating your cake and immolating it too."

Over the past few years, Chieli Minucci has faced breakups of the two marriages that defined most of his entire adult life -- both from his wife and, more to the musical point, from percussionist George Jinda, his longtime partner in the band Special EFX. It's Gonna Be Good, the guitarist's third solo album, is an aggressive, multi-faceted, self exploratory work -- a musical testament to the notion of moving on with a positive attitude. Though parting ways with Jinda was a bit of a tightrope walk for Minucci -- the duo was for years one of the genre's most popular outfits -- he's conquered his own doubts by attacking fresh ideas that reflect the full range of his musical tastes. Not to say that Minucci doesn't, on occasion, pay homage to his roots.
