In the cyber-drenched 1990s, David Bowie once again proves himself ahead of the game. OUTSIDE is more a monumental collage of techno-war coldness than a mere album. Bowie combines the most essential pieces of each of his previous personas and musical styles to make OUTSIDE into an all-too-dense song-cycle with a story-line. Sound-wise, it is a closer musical approximation of "industrial" noise than the throbbing tones created by most young guns half his age.
OUTSIDE begins with the premise that the action is taking place here and now ("not tomorrow"), in a fading industrial town in New Jersey, circa 1995. A place that is littered with characters facing inhuman desperation as "rejects from the world-wide internet," making plans to "lease the moon" above their shop. Musically, Bowie reaches for the same densely evocative landscapes that make OUTSIDE's themes so disconcertingly real. A perverse mish-mash of booming classical piano trills loop in and out of machine-like drums and Bowie's schizophrenic monologues. Through the different characters we see the horrible truths of our dying culture--romance, for instance, is brought down with the admission, "if there was only something between us...besides our clothes." OUTSIDE is happening right now, right here.

Prior to his transformation into the Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust or any of a half dozen personas that he's taken on throughout his career, David Bowie was just another art student struggling to make the leap to fame and fortune. THE DERAM ANTHOLOGY is a fascinating look into the early workings of a legendary artist. Bowie's mucking about for a hit included Anthony Newley-influenced numbers ("Rubber Band"), a novelty song ("The Laughing Gnome") swinging London lounge ("Love You Till Tuesday") and pale imitations of early Pink Floyd ("She's Got Medals.") Other more notable attempts to distinguish these numbers included adding lots of orchestration ("The London Boys"), weather-related sound effects ("Please Mr. Gravedigger") and kitschy banjo and clavinet arrangements ("Did You Ever Have A Dream"). After spending almost two years recording and watching his singles get roundly ignored by the public, Bowie started forming his unique style upon working with new producer Tony Visconti in late 1967 (This association would last another 13 years). Some of the earliest numbers of these sessions included the psychedelic folk of Bowie's mixed media trio Feathers on "Ching-A-Ling," the baroque grandiosity of "When I Live My Dream" and an early version of "Space Oddity," which is where it all started.

The cliche about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. Prior to his breakthrough in 1972, he recorded a proto-metal record and a pop/rock album, eventually redefining glam rock with his ambiguously sexy Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy made Bowie an international star, yet he wasn't content to continue to churn out glitter rock. By the mid-'70s, he developed an effete, sophisticated version of Philly soul that he dubbed "plastic soul," which eventually morphed into the eerie avant-pop of 1976's Station to Station. Shortly afterward, he relocated to Berlin, where he recorded three experimental electronic albums with Brian Eno. At the dawn of the '80s, Bowie was still at the height of his powers, yet following his blockbuster dance-pop album Let's Dance in 1983, he slowly sank into mediocrity before salvaging his career in the early '90s. Even when he was out of fashion in the '80s and '90s, it was clear that Bowie was one of the most influential musicians in rock, for better and for worse. Each one of his phases in the '70s sparked a number of subgenres, including punk, new wave, goth rock, the new romantics, and electronica. Few rockers ever had such lasting impact.

Considering that David Lee Roth's solo career crashed after two albums and an EP, it should have been easy to assemble a 20-track greatest-hits compilation. Rhino's The Best proves that isn't so. Most of Roth's best-known songs are here, including "California Girls," "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," "Yankee Rose," "Ladies Nite in Buffalo?," "Goin' Crazy," "Skyscraper," "Just Like Paradise," and "Stand Up." However, the collection contains too many mediocrities from the flat albums A Little Ain't Enough and Your Filthy Little Mouth while overlooking radio and MTV staples like "Damn Good" and "That's Life." Furthermore, the collection isn't assembled in chronological order, which makes it a bit of a difficult listen. Even with these faults, there's no arguing that The Best does distill Roth's best solo recordings to one disc, making it a useful compilation for most casual fans. Nevertheless, after listening to all of The Best, many listeners will probably think a little is enough and 20 tracks might be a bit too much

The acclaim that met Dexter Gordon when he returned to the United States after 14 years in Europe was completely unexpected. Not only did the jazz critics praise the great tenor but there were literally lines of young fans waiting to see his performances. This double CD, recorded during his historic first American tour, improved on the original double LP with the inclusion of previously unreleased versions of "Fried Bananas" and "Body and Soul." Gordon -- in a quintet with trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Louis Hayes -- frequently sounds exuberant on these lengthy performances; eight of the ten songs are at least 11 minutes long. The excitement of the period can definitely be felt in this excellent music.
Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on December 11 & 12, 1976. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (CBS Records New York Studios, New York, New York).
A double-disc document of the legendary saxophonist's gig at the Vanguard in 1976 (commemorating his return from a 15-year residence in Copenhagen), HOMECOMING captures Gordon in outstanding form. Well-seasoned and displaying elements of a more adventurous, experimental approach than was evidenced in his earlier recordings, Gordon wildly riffs through 12-bar blues ("Gingerbread Boy," "Backstairs") and creates modern, modal explorations in trumpet player Woody Shaw's two compositions ("Little Red Fantasy," and "In Case You Haven't Heard").
The classic Gordon is here as well, however--the gorgeous, commanding tone, the richly-considered phrases and warm inflection. In the bright, conversational "Fenja" and in his signature number "Body and Soul" (a piece Gordon may be able to lay claim to more than any other saxophonist save Coleman Hawkins) his playing is at once familiar and newly impressive. The live energy is palpable throughout and the combo provide solid, focused support. A varied, meaty and seductive set, HOMECOMING is an excellent summation of the career of one of jazz's best-loved horn players.
