Welcome to the National Online Distance Education Service

In Sri Lanka, greater opportunities for tertiary education are being created through Online Distance Learning (ODL). Universities, professional associations, private and public sector education institutions are adopting this mode of learning to cater to a larger student population.

A loan agreement between the Asian Development Bank and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, that was signed on August 18, 2003, launched the Distance Education Modernisation Project (DEMP). DEMP is an initiative of the Ministry of Higher Education.
One outcome of DEMP is the means to develop online distance learning institutions and a means for delivering ODL throughout the country, and beyond. This is called NODES, the National Online Distance Education Service.
