Guys....
Now everyone goes for more & more high end PCs....but do we get full use of those capabilities?I've seen many people use Core2s just for typing..etc(M$ Office)..some use jst to listen songs...etc..
and now power consumption for these PCs also too high.....for example it one uses just M$ word....why we waste power by using Core2 and not Pentium2?country like SL don't have money to waste...we should get max use of what something cost to us to accelarate developing...

Guys feel free to express your views...and remeber this is EK Pro! :D

hmmm.... first you should decide what you are going to do with the computer. then you should buy one for those needs. buying latest computers without any use is just waste of money. i realy dnt know those use lot power. but even money for buying those......
for me.... still struck with my P4.... :p :p :p cuz all i do surf net and MS word.

yeah.....and we shoul consider Speed : Power ratio [MHz/W] ;
even it's low...if we need low CPU power ....i think we should go for old PC..

for ex:for overnight torrent downloading i think P1 is better....(i do like that...but these days my HDD is not working on it :( )

hey hey its done by the software makers, for example take m$ they made vista and vista needs a good machine to run..with at least 1gb RAM then they made office 2007 for vista that makes people buy vista and office at the same time even though office runs on xp most of the people just upgrade to vista because its just new..
i know a govmnt office got 4 vista loaded machines with 1gb RAM to work in AutoCAD 2009 ;P and they only get 500mb RAM to run AutoCAD after its being used up for vista's eye candy!

1)Why can't we go for alternatives for Vista & Office 2k7 ?
2)Hafoi....I think it's better to use Autocad with XP....i don't think Vista is good for those kind of things...

Machan you are not correct here.pentium 3 s manufactured by 180 nano process, but recent core 2 duos and quads manufactured by 45nano process.

these core2 s have less power consumptions(65w tdp) than original pentium 3s(95w tdp)

yeah sure!!! but for thing like torrents .... we can use P-MMX/P1 or even 80486(if we found one)..P-MMX 166Mhz is just 13W and it's more than needed..
And not only the CPU need high power....what about other parts....M/B,RAM etc...

i'm not telling that we should not use Core2 and go for old age....
we should have a good practise on using them...

Agreed ,but it depends on the availability of the market. If some one wants to buy a new computer with warranty .there is no way he could buy a Pentium 3 pc

Yes you are correct , the week before last my Uncle bought new computer C2D with 1 mb ram , 160 HDD and other spec. not for Gaming , but his office works with Word and Excel ...

We looked for normal PC for his works but , we didn't found normal PC under warranty and he did costs it only 20500 RS ( without monitor ) cheap and got 3 yrs warranty...

but he will never use it Under Maximum performance :P

we can and will go for other OSs but others wont ; i have a 2GHz dual core 1gb RAM but i never thought of putting vista on this :P

First of all the fact that "newer CPU's consume more power" is not true..
For an example if you compare a 3.0GHz Pentium D and 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo..The PD consumes more power than the C2D...

But I agree with your point most of us don't utilize our PC's resources to the highest potential...
This doesn't apply for the younger generation as most of the guys in the 15-25 age group keep upgrading their PC's in order to keep in touch with the ever flooding Gaming market...

But as you said the lack of computing knowledge among the "average Joes" in Sri Lanka is exploited by the PC retailers to sell their high end machines just to do word processing and to surf the web...

So my point is first of all the Lankan ppl should be educated on this subject properly in order to save power and unnecesary spending on Computers
