Amritha Muttiah became the first Sri Lankan girl to win an ITF title when she clinched the under-18 singles title with an easy win at the ITF Junior Tennis Championship concluded at the SSC courts, Maitland Place today. Muttiah sailed past Ankita Bhatha of India with ease in just over an hour. Muttiah who had a tough semi-final clash against Na Li of China found Bhatha an easier hurdle to clear.
Sri Lanka’s boys’ doubles pair of Amresh Jayawickrema and Vimuktha de Alwis brought honour to the country when they defeated their opponents from India in an exciting finish. The second saw the Lankan pair leading on 5/2 but the set had to be decided on the tie breaker as the scores reached 6/all in the set.
