Just like the entire Rajapaksa family, candidate Gotabaya blatantly abuses the concept of patriotism.
A US citizen while functioning as Sri Lanka’s Defense Secretary, Gotabaya stands accused of carrying out several executions including that of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga and defense expert Dr. Amith Munindradasa.
Lasantha was murdered after the MiG deal – but, Munindradasa was killed before the UAV deal.
The exposure of the latter’s murder has been made by an intelligence officer who knew the inside out.
Fatal deal
In April 2007, Lanka Logistics forced the Air Force to buy an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system.
The relevant concept paper came from Lanka Logistics.
The Defence Secretary (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) was its chairman and the commanders of the three armed forces were its members. To say it all, Gotabaya was the almighty and the commanders were his underlings.
What Lanka Logistics tried to force on the Air Force was the Israeli-built UAV system ‘Blue Horizon 2’.
It was developed by EMIT Aviation Consultants.
The opinion of the Air Force was that it would be a money-eating white elephant.
The conclusion was made on the basis of a report by a six-member committee appointed by the Air Force commander. Air Commodore P.B. Ratnayake and UAV commandant M.D.J. Vaas were among its members. The report also pointed out that the Israel company had not made a capability exhibition for the item.
Gotabaya pressurized for the finalization of the deal
According to the intelligence officer who made the revelation, Gotabaya Continued to intimidate the Air Force to ignore the report that give into the Israeli UAV deal.
He planned to finalize the deal in the second quarter of 2007 in order to pocket a commission of many millions of US dollars.
Since 1991, the technical consultant on weapons deals of the armed forces had been Dr. Amith Munindradasa.
Munindradasa vehemently opposed this UAV deal. He insisted that he would not sign this swindling of public money.
However, allegedly coming under strong pressure by Gotabaya and the Defence Ministry, Munindradasa had to go to Israel on 06 June 2007. Arriving there, he was accommodated at Tel Aviv Marina Hotel. The fate of the UAV deal hinged on his signature.
Toxic injection and pneumonia in Tel Aviv
The local agent for this deal was Arjuna Gunawardena, another underling of Gotabaya.
He represented Protect Risk Management Solutions Ltd, a fake company claimed to be operating in Britain.
It was a non-existent company like the Belimissa Holdings in the MiG deal.
Even the Israeli parent company EMIT Aviation Consultants was a blacklisted one. On 09 June 2007, it made a test flight of its UAV in front of Munindradasa. For him, electric equipment were like mere toys. Without wasting any time, Munindradasa annulled this UAV deal already condemned by the Air Force .
On 11 June 2007, Munindradasa was unexpectedly hospitalized and he was pronounced dead on the following day at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. The cause of death was given as pneumonia.
According to family members, Munindradasa was at the prime of health.
He never took western medicine and his choice had always been the Ayurvedic method of healing.
Munindradasa was the epitome of health both physically and mentally. It was a mystery as to how he contracted pneumonia in the Tel Aviv desert.
Family members requested the Sri Lankan government to perform a postmortem examination on his body.
Pressure exerted on the family members
However, when his remains were brought to Sri Lanka, their request was rejected.
Also, the family members had come under intimidation by The Defense Ministry.
An unofficial censorship was imposed on his funeral and the media coverage was restricted.
Since Munindradasa was an old Royalist, a number of his schoolmate doctors attended the funeral.
Rejecting the pneumonia claim, they said the cause of his death was due to some toxin entering his body.
Six days into his death, Lanka Logistics paid half of the amount for the UAV deal.
Gota finalized the deal in violation of the Establishment Code. Blue Horizon 2 was bought from EMIT Aviation Consultants at 6.5 million US dollars. However, its competitive price was half that amount.
The UAV deal is a carbon copy of the MiG deal. Lasantha was murdered after the MiG deal, Munindradasa was killed before the UAV deal.
Gotabaya’s rubber seal
Munindradasa was the only obstacle in Gotabaya’s way to finalize the deal through Lanka Logistics. He had rejected several arms deals handled by Gotabaya.
For Gotabaya, the commanders of the armed forces were mere rubber seals. But, Munindradasa was a real patriot.
The land deeds offered to the commanders of the armed forces at the end of the Eelam War was a bribe, not a recognition of their services. A bribe to silence them forever.
They were partners to improper deals carried out through Lanka Logistics.
More evidence to prove that Munindradasa was murdered
There is more evidence to prove that Munindradasa was murdered. In early 2007, a member of the Karuna faction had wanted to photograph a particular house in Panadura.
For that, he had sought the assistance of the intelligence officer making this revelation and had gone and photographed a house at Pirivena Road at Pinwatte in Panadura.
Munindradasa’s death came a few months later.
It was not difficult to understand that the house that was photographed by the Karuna faction member was Munindradasa’s home. The contract given to the Karuna faction became clear.
Dr. Amith Munindradasa was a national asset that should have been protected. However, the Defence Ministry was alleged to have sent vehicles without number-plates to his home in a bid to exposed him. This had repeatedly been criticized by Munindradasa.
It was not a coincidence that the Defence Ministry played with his life at a time when suicide bombers reigned supreme in Colombo.
Had the first attempt failed by any chance, the second had been to silence Munindradasa with a bomb blamed on the Tigers.
He was a person with a unique intelligence. He was a true patriot.
Israel had several times offered him a top defence position in the country, and even a topmost posting at the Tel Aviv University.
During the period he was the technical consultant to the Sri Lankan armed forces, he was offered millions as gratifications. Lanka Logistics went after him with those gratifications.
But, for all those, his answer was that he was educated with the money of the innocent people of the country and that his intention was to pay back that debt and not to amass money. He always said that he would serve the motherland until his death.
