A 17 year old youth was killed when UPFA candidate Duminda Silva fired from his firearm during a clash between UPFA candidates for preference votes just before polling ended today at Badowita polling station at Dehiwela. The youth who received gunshot injuries was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 6.00 p.m. today.
UPFA candidate R. Duminda Silva had come to Badowita polling station with his supporters in a white Prado vehicle bearing reg. no. GS – 2707 and several other vehicles. He had visited a person called Hariet and at this place a woman there had said, “ Duminda doesn’t have preference votes here.” This had stared the clash.
A person called Ajanthe, a resident of Badowita too had joined in the clash and Ajanthe had abused Duminda Silva. When Duminda Silva pulled out his firearm and attempted to shoot Ajanthe he had pushed another person in front of Duminda. The youth who was nearby received the shot
The youth who was seriously injured was rushed to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital by those who had gathered there. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
This is the second murder during the Western PC election. No one has been taken into custody for the first murder though a vehicle and a firearm have been taken into custody. Here too, despite eyewitnesses, no one has been taken into custody yet.
