    A tsunami alert has been issued for the Cocos Islands northwest of Perth after a 6.6 underwater earthquake was recorded in the Indian Ocean.

    6.4 magnitude quake hits in Indian Ocean

    A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday in the south of the Indian Ocean ad a depth of 7.1 km, USGS reported. The closest land to the epicenter is the Cocos Islands, located 675km east southeast. A tsunami warning was issued following the tremor, but residents of the islands are not required to evacuate, only to move away from waterfront.

    An undersea earthquake occurred near SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN which had
    the potential to cause a tsunami threat to Australia.

    No tsunami waves have been observed that may cause a threat to COCOS ISLAND.

    Tsunami Warnings for COCOS ISLAND are therefore CANCELLED.

    No updates or further warnings will be issued unless the situation changes.

    An undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.6 occurred at
    5:41 PM local time on Saturday 14 June 2014 near SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN.
    Although the earthquake had the potential to cause a tsunami threat to

    COCOS ISLAND.
