EC says Fonseka eligible

Elections Commissioner Dayananada Dissanayaka released a statement a short while ago stating that a candidate need not be a registered voter nor cast his vote in order to be eligible to run for office. Thereby opposition candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka is eligible to run for the post of the 6th executive President of Sri Lanka.

ජනාධිපති අපේක්ෂකත්වය වෙනුවෙන් ඡන්ද හිමියෙකු ලෙස ලියාපදිංචිවීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය කරුණක් නොවන බව මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස් දයානන්ද දිශානායක මහතා පැවසීය. අද විශේෂ මාධ්‍ය නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස්වරයා මේ බව දක්වා ඇත.
එම නිවේදනයේ වැඩිදුරටත් දක්වා ඇත්තේ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බලපවත්නා මැතිවරණ නීතිය අනුව ඡන්ද හිමියෙකු ලෙස ලියාපදිංචිවීම හෝ නොවීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය කරුණක් නොවන බවත්, එය අපේක්ෂකත්වය හෝ තෝරා පත් කර ගැනීමට බල නොපාන බවත්ය.
