A notice issued by the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (28) warned Institutions and individuals against making allegations without proper investigation in regard to charges being made that State assets and vehicles are being used for the President’s election campaign. The notice further stated no such use was being made.
This notice has been issued by the Presidential secretariat without itself conducting a proper investigation into the charges leveled.
According to the Lanka e News inquiries, it has been discovered State vehicles and assets are being openly used for the Presidential elections campaign.
We give below particulars of the State assets, state officers and State vehicles used by the elder brother of the President Chamal Rajapakse, Ports Minister for his younger brother’s election campaign. The registration numbers of the vehicles released for election campaign by the Ports Authority are as follows :
(1) 250 - 1166 Isuzu Cab
(2) 59 - 7185
(3) 253 - 9132
(4) 59 - 7188
(5) WP PA 1735
(6) WP PA 4002
(7) 224 - 9407 Lorry
(8) WP VC - 2636 Cab
(9) WP GC 9688 car
(10) 252 – 5571 an arson case is progressing in the court regarding this vehicle. (11) 59 - 7619 Lorry
(12) WP PB - 7760
(13) 253 - 6211
The following new vehicles procured for the Ports Authority too are being used for election purposes and not for Ports work.

(2) WP LG - 4447
(3) WP LG - 4740

(7) WP LG - 4742
(8) WP LG - 4737

In addition, the Ports Authority Chairman is using three vehicles for election campaign. however these vehicles registration numbers have been changed – we give below the actual registration nos. of the vehicles and the numbers under which they are being used.
(1) vehicle No. PB 4098, changed No. WP G7 – 3613
(2) vehicle No. PB 4099, changed No. WP G7 - 3617
(3) vehicle No. WP KA 484, changed No. 3618 Audi
What’s more ? the property including all the buildings thereon at Johnston watte at DR Wijewardena Mawatha belonging to Ports Authority are being used for the President’s election campaign activities. This area has been demarcated as a high security zone and nobody is allowed to enter the zone.
This premises is used as a center to distribute President’s banners, cutouts and posters across the Island. Over Ports employees are released to engage in theses activities. Apart from their regular salaries, they are also paid overtime and ‘batta’ by the Ports authority.
Some Ports Unions say the leaders of these groups are given 9 mm pistols and repeater guns for their security.
The Ports Authority is openly indulging brazenly and blatantly in all these unlawful activities despite these actions being clearly banned by the Elections Commissioner by virtue of the powers vested in him under S27 (2) of the provision 103 of the constitution.
