[QUOTE="arunat, post: 18819825, member: 253101"] Eran Wickremaratne: I know this man pretty well. He is one of the cleverest guys I have ever met. He was my school mate at Royal Collage; the Captain of our Champion RC Hockey team in 1976 and a caring classy friend though I often blasted him later for entering into politics, leaving his brilliant career as a banker. I don’t know where to start this story… but I know the end. He will rise to great heights in politics. He is almost a Saint with a wild streak! Hockey, Rugby, Soccer, Basketball Captains do not have much choice on the field like Cricket Captains who will change the field placing and change bowlers or the batting order. A Hockey Captain commands and controls the team far ahead of the match; mainly on fitness and tactics. Cohesion is his job. Eran was not a star hockey player; but he had command of the team. Most of us were smokers. We had not much money to smoke. But we never smoked in his presence. We would ask Eran for 25 cts. “What for?” he would ask. “Just give” I would say. We buy 2 fags and go behind “Masthanas” and smoke out of his sight. He knows. That was the respect he commanded. His family never goes to a Cinema. So the bastard took me 11 times to watch the ‘Circus Pacifia’ that I used to know the names of the elephants and the lions by the time they thankfully left for India! I was always late for morning matches. They had a Volkswagen. He would come home the night before and take me with my gear to sleep at his home. There was this church organ at AOG Colpetty. I used to practice on it till late and sleep later in his room, on the next bed. The DP Mr. EC Gunasekera (Kataya) wants to see each team at 10 AM if there is a match that afternoon. He usually asks how many goals have you scored and asks the Captain what strategy have you adopted for the match, I stand right back though I am a forward / striker in the team. I dare not move my head as the DP will spot my long hair. We had a match that afternoon with St. Thomas’ Collage. The junior grounds is notoriously bumpy and pretty dangerous; true. Eran was asked about strategy for the match. He comes out like a shot “Sir, we are playing 4-4-2-1” [Means 4 forwards, 4 halves instead of the regular 5 forwards and 3 halves] “Why" asks Kataya…. Eran says the ground is bumpy. Kataya accepts. After the team meeting I collard Eran outside. [I was his star striker and he is my right-half behind and feeding me] “What was that you were saying about 4-4-2-1?" I needed to know. He says “Take it easy, when Kataya asks a question you must always have a ready answer; he knows only Cricket, but not about Hockey!” Now it made sense to me! That afternoon we played our usual 5-3-2-1 formation. This is the wild streak in Eran. He was a senior Collage prefect who removed and took my shoe with him while I was ‘jumping over the wall’ One day both of us were near the Geometrical Drawing Class on the East Wing and Kataya was turning the corner about 10 m away. Eran hooted and shouted “Ado Kataya”!!! I was horrified… He took my hand and we ran like hell…. That is the wild streak in him… I wanted to write this from 2013 but never got down to it. Now with this election coming up I thought it is a good time to finally write it. I spoke to him. I told him that I care a fuck about your party (UNP), but you have my vote and my confidence in you.
