    Let me guess .....
are you using a Prolink USB ADSL Modem? (Prolink H9601 to be exact)
and when do you get these error messages? Is it after you've been using the modem and being connected for quite some time?

Yeah i'm using the same modem and i've been having the same problem.
    I've been solutionless for quite a long time now....but recently i got a breakthrough:lol:

I found out that this crashing problem is because the Connexant chip in the modem is heating up with long use and then i guess the modem just crashes.

Now the best solution to try out would be a heatsink and a fan. I couldn't get to it coz these days i'm busy with my exam work:(

However i tried out by opening the plastic cover of the modem and i rigged a big 120mm fan over it. That cooled down the chip quite a lot and i can use it now lengthened periods of time without getting my PC crashed.

But....this is not a permanent solution. I've been wondering we can do the same thing we do for our processors here as well...we could apply thermal paste on the chip and fix up a fan and a heatsink (an old 486 processor heatsink and fan would do i think). Only probel is getting the power supply whichll have to be external plus you'll have to keep the modem PCB open. But i guess a new plastic casing would be possible too. I'm thinking of trying it out in my hols.

PS-i've also tried out a new method...i won't describe it. Just see for yourselves. (don't laugh ok....):D:D:D:D:P:P:P
