Since this thread is about Etisalat dongles and upload speeds etc etc, as an engineer at Etisalat, I also like to add few comments…


Looking at the screen shots posted by TLDK, the upload speed seems to be never exceeding 0.11Mbps.



But, on this same thread you see other people posting speedtest.net results for Etisalat, with much better upload speeds. Check out replies posted above by 33000W, jeffli, and Anuja methsara. They seems to be getting better upload speed from Etisalat, compared to what TLDK gets.

So, why is it TLDK always get a lower UL speed, where as there are other users who get much better UL speeds?

Let me explain a little bit about how technology works exactly in this situation…

Upload(UL) or download(DL) Speed on wireless broadband networks will depend on couple of Factors.

1) Capability of the network
Any operator will have a max DL & UL speed depend on the technology of their network. For example Etisalat is currently having broadband with HSPA+ or in more technical term 3GPP Release-7. In this release it can support maximum speeds of DL-21Mbps and UL-5.76Mbps.

2) Capability of the Device (Mobile phone, Dongle ..etc)
Any technological advancement comes with backward compatibility. In other words, newer technology can always have the ability to support old technologies. That’s why you could see WCDMA, HSDPA, HSPA in addition to HSPA+ in your dongle application. So the maximum DL or UL speed will simply will depend on the device you use.

For example lets take the max speed of dongles Etisalat sells in the market,
Huawei E153 3.6Mbps (DL) 384 kbps(UL)
Huawei E173 7.2Mbps(DL) 5.76Mbps(UL)
Huawei E367 21Mbps(DL) 5.76Mbps(UL)

This is the reason for the difference in the prices of each type. If you want better upload and download speed from the network, you will have to use a device which gives you the maximum performance. It’s not fair to expect the same UL and DL speed from all the dongles.

Now this is really important!!!! Please read on!

When you chose (buy) a dongle for your use, always think about what is your need. Why you want an internet connection?


If you are a normal internet user, who use internet to just browse web sites, cheapest Huawei E153 dongle is more than enough for you!



That dongle will give you up to 3.6Mbps (average, you will get about 2Mbps which is more than enough for simple web browsing). For an average (normal) internet user, UL speed of 0.11Mbps is not going to be a big issue.



Of course, that same device will not be suitable for a heavy “uploader”, someone who is seeding torrent files or sharing heavy files with others on the internet.

If you are a ‘heavy uploader” and expecting better upload speed performance, you need to use a device which is designed for your need.


This is like buying a car! If your requirement is to travel from home to work, a 800CC car will do it. But, if your need is to regularly go on Safari tours, you might need to go for a 2800CC 4WD.



So my advice is to match your expectations with the device you actually use.



If your expectation is simple web browsing, which largely require a good download speed, a Huawei E153 will do the trick for you.



If your expectation is to download heavy movies (and do it quickly), you may have to upgrade to a better dongle.



And, finally if you are a heavy uploader, a torrent seeder, you definitely have to support your need with a dongle designed for that purpose!

There’s one more thing! Etisalat servers will allocate network resources to user downloads and uploads, depending on the demand. A test carried out on Speedtest.net may get less priority in our network, compared to some big upload (a real life situation, rather than a speed test) by a different user.
