Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka handed over computers and equipment to the six ‘confident authorities’ of Bio Safety Clearing Mechanism, on the 09th, Wednesday at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The six confident authorities are the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Fisheries and Water Resources, Department of Animal Production, Department of Wildlife Conservation and Ministry of Industrial Development.

Minister Champika Ranawaka said the Sinhala language is older than Indian languages with a history of more than 3,000 years, which has to be given special emphasis. Every effort has to be taken to protect the Sinhala language.

Minister Further said that some Sinhala FM channels were destroying Sinhala and English languages like in the United States mixing English and Spanish thus destroying both languages.

He said that the US which talks of culture, built their culture by destroying 267 cultures and languages. Canada too talks of Human Rights while destroying the Human Rights of 27 communities.

Minister Ranawaka said that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has launched a number of programmes to protect biodiversity. ‘We have to be proud of Sri Lanka’s natural resources amounting to 20,000 species of which 1,500 are endemic to the country,’
