Pro LTTE media, after starving for days without war news ended the trend yesterday by grossly exaggerating SLA casualty details in Nachchikuda and Akkarayankulama. The following headline is from Pro LTTE Tamilnet.com; "Tigers locate 29 SLA bodies, 75 SLA killed, 100 wounded in Vanni". The actual SLA casualty figures are nowhere near what this report indicates.

The Sri Lanka Army has lost 15 soldiers in the fighting while 32 more received injuries. Tigers have captured the bodies of 7 soldiers. 17 LTTE fighters are confirmed killed and over 60 have been wounded. The SLA operations to the north of Nachchikuda and Akkarayankulam continue despite heavy LTTE resistance and desperate counterattacks.

ICRC delivers nineteen mortal remains of heroic soldiers

Army authorities serving Omanthai Entry/ Exit point Wednesday (3) evening received nineteen partly disfigured and decomposed corpses of Army soldiers, confirmed to have been delivered to the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) officials by Tiger terrorists in Mullaittivu district.

Army headquarters yesterday dismissed reports that fighting elements of Task Force I and 57 Division deployed on the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu fronts, respectively, were in jeopardy following LTTE counter attacks on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy fighting in the western part of the Vanni has triggered reports of the army being encircled at Mallavi which it had fully secured on Tuesday. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara yesterday said that the army was in control of the situation on the Vanni front. Task Force I advancing on the Kilinochchi front faced four LTTE counter attacks but succeeded in overwhelming the enemy, he said.

He dismissed LTTE claims that the army had lost 75 officers and men on two fronts (Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu west) and over 100 wounded in action.

He placed the total number of dead at 5 and the wounded at 48. Of the wounded, 17 had been wounded at the Nachchikuda theatre and the rest at Akkayankulam. Seven personnel reported missing at Nachchikuda were believed to have been killed and bodies recovered by the LTTE, he said.

Responding to our queries, the spokesman said the army had not abandoned any territorial gains made in the recent past by the Task Force I and the 57 Division.

The military said that heavy confrontations had taken place at Terankandal, Akkayankulam, Nachchikuda and Kunchikulam, west of the A 9 where the LTTE had brought in reinforcements to resist the arm advance.

The military said that the LTTE had counter attacked after troops took a further 400 metres of LTTE front line defences north east of Nachchikuda. Nanayakkra said troops subsequently recovered two bodies, two T-56 assault rifles and thirty five 81 mm bombs.

The LTTE claimed that it had recovered 19 bodies of soldiers killed in Vanni battles. The military said that clashes occurred at the Nachchikuda theatre and an area between Akkarayan and Vannearkulam

ICRC spokesman Sarasi Wijeratne last evening said that ICRC representatives in Kilinochchi had received bodies of 19 SLA and were in the process of transferring them to Omanthai to be handed over.
