Fierce confrontations reported in north of Kombavil as troops of 58 Division advanced further into the LTTE's last stronghold, Puthukudiyiruppu yesterday, 24 February, latest military report received from the battlefront said.
According to the sources, LTTE cadres facing heavy defeat and retaliation from the Security Forces, fled the area leaving arms and bodies. Scores of LTTE cadres were killed and many wounded, military sources added.
In subsequent search operations conducted troops have found 8 bodies of LTTE terrorists killed during the hours long confrontation. 8 x T-56 weapons, 1 x T-81 weapons and and 2 x I-Com sets were also found during the confrontation.
Meanwhile, troops of 12 Gajaba Regiment (12 GR) conducting search and clear operations in general area Visuamadu uncovered 5 x T-56 weapons, 1 x RPG and 2 x large claymore mines during morning hours on the same day.
Separately, army snipers deployed in general area north of Puthukkudiyiruppu gunned down 6 LTTE terrorists ahead of the defence line, military report received from the battlefront said.

Troops of 6 Gemunu Watch (6GW), 7 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (7SLSR), 8 GW and 9 GW under command to 58 Division cleared the LTTE-built earth bund in general area Devipuram while troops advanced towards Puthukudiyiruppu. Abandoned earth moving vehicles which were used by the LTTE terrorists to build the earth bund, double cabs, lorries and busses were also in the area.
