Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) sources said that SLAF could have easily shot down the LTTE aircraft before it crashed into the Inland Revenue Department
(IRD) building Friday night, had a five star hotel in the vicinity virtually not given the directions to the Tiger flight by switching on lights in the hotel building and compound. The whole of Colombo was in darkness after radars detected two LTTE aircraft heading for the city, after taking off from Mullaitivu.
"One of the planes which flew over Chaithiya junction was circling the area many times in an attempt to locate the target. All of a sudden the five star hotel switched on its lights and then the plane was seen moving towards air force headquarters", a LAKBIMAnEWs staffer who is an eyewitness to the incident said. "At a time when the whole of Colombo was plunged into darkness, the hotel decides to switch on even its garden lights" he asserted. Meanwhile it is evident that the two planes were targeting SLAF headquarters in Colombo and the SLAF base in Katunayake as a pro LTTE website indicated. Temple Trees may have been a possible target.
Tamilnet falsely claimed "The LTTE Friday night claimed two aircraft on a Black Air Tiger mission dived into Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Headquarters in Colombo and into the SLAF base at Katunayaka, carrying out sucessful air raids".
Our staffer said: "I was with some friends at the press club discussing the
country’s situation.
Since the "lights went off we came out of the club and we saw flashlights being swished around and anti aircraft guns firing in the air.
Then all of a sudden a plane came from the side of the port towards Chaithiya junction and began circling the area and, suddenly the hotel in the vicinity of SLAF switched on its lights and then the plane went in the direction of SLAF Headquarters".
Hotel should be in trouble for sure!!!!!
