Floods and earth slips caused by heavy rains in several parts of Sri Lanka have affected over 16,000 people and claimed 8 lives, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) reported.

According to the latest figures released by the DMC, 16,956 in 4,609 families in Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala, and Ratnapura Districts have been affected by heavy rains and floods.

Eight deaths have been reported so far and ten have been injured, the DMC said.

The rains and earth slips have damaged 50 houses completely and another 234 houses partially, the DMC reported.

Rising water levels of Kelani River have displaced 67 persons of 15 families and the displaced have been provided shelter in 10 camps.

Two earth slips occurred at Kithulgala has caused traffic congestion in the Avissawella -Hatton Road.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department warned of more thundershowers in the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts in the Southern Province and requested the public to take precautions to guard against lightning.
