Transgender is a general term applied to a variety of individuals, behaviours, and groups involving tendencies to deviate from the normative gender roles. India is home to the largest number of the transgenders in the world. Due to their unique identity, this community continues to live as a marginalized group in the society, with very few livelihood options. Their deviation from the normative gender roles assigned by general society also causes them to be a largely discriminated community being at risk to sexual, physical and emotional abuse

Transgender people are called 'Hijras' in India and in Tamil they are commonly referred to as 'Alis'. The members of the community have now begun to refer to themselves as Aravanis. Tamil Nadu has an estimated population of 30,000 transgender people.:eek: They meet in Koovagam, a village in the Ulundurpet Taluk of Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, India in the Tamil month of Chitthira [April/May] for an annual festival which takes place for fifteen days.

After an year long field documentation carried out by NFSC researchers and collaborators from the Transgender community, NFSC came up with a 40minute documentary that depicts the life cycle ceremonies of the transgendered community in Tamil Nadu. Starting with their adoption and initiation in the form of 'Milk pouring ceremony' after the fortieth day of the surgery, the documentary captures the community gathering in Koovagam village, for marriage with the God Aravan and widowhood followed by return to the society after his beheading in Mahabharata theatre/ritual/festival. Apart from interviews with people from the transgendered community, the documentary includes excerpts from traditional epic singing in the praise of God Aravan. Category:
