Fonseka allowed to retire with “immediate effect”

The government information department quoted President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga as saying Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka has been given permission by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to retire from service with immediate effect. The General has earlier wanted to retire from the end of this month.
