Madrid are aware, though, that an impressive showing at the Olympic Games with his nation could increase interest in their target even further, making early negotiations even more important. To make things even more complicated, FIFA's punishment over the signing of under-age players is still pending, and could see the team shut out of the 2017 winter and summer transfer windows if the case goes against them. Diego Llorente, Jesus Vallejo and Borja Mayoral have left the club on loan, and Madrid are not ruling out the possibility of completing the deal for Gabriel now and leaving him at Palmeiras until the start of the new year. Barcelona, meanwhile, will not wait until 2017 to land their man. The Blaugrana are keen to sign a back-up striker behind the MSN for the new season, and liked Gabriel's profile as the 'fourth man' behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. However, the club are already looking at other options for an immediate transfer and will not enter a bidding war for the young Brazilian.
