The French film "The Class" has won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival.

The frank tale about classroom life uses real students and teachers at a junior high school

"The Class," directed by Laurent Cantet, is shot in a raw, improvisational style to chronicle the drama that unfolds over one school year.

Prizes at the Cannes Film Festival were announced Sunday.
