COURT SUSPENDS DISPLAY OF “GAMANI” ON INTERNET
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has issued an order immediately suspending the display of the film Gamani through internet .The Court gave this ruling after considering a complaint made by Upali Rajapaksa, the producer of the film. The Sinhala film based on a true story dealing with the cruelty of terrorism had been produced by spending more than 50 million rupees. However, certain groups sans the consent of the Producer or the Director had taken copies of the film and sold DVD’s and also displayed on the internet. It is suspected that there may be a conspiracy based by tiger loyalists to reduce the expected earnings from the film. The Producer had also lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department on the efforts of some saboteurs.
Following investigations, the CID has informed the Court that they had unearthed information of some websites from which full copies of the film could be obtained. The Colombo Chief Magistrate has ordered the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and Sri Lanka Telecom to take immediate action to suspend the display of the film over internet. Orders were also given intimate information of individuals who are involved in posting the film to websites.
