altThe final result announced at the end of the held presidential election was a distorted result and he was not prepared to accept it says apolitical Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka.
Addressing a press conference held in Colombo yesterday (27th) Gen. Fonseka said, “We, following election laws to the letter, presented an election manifesto to get the support of the masses. We met masses throughout the period of over one month, spoke to them and we saw the enthusiasm they had.
However, the result that has been issued does not reflect any of this. It is a result that could not be expected even at a minor election. Hence, we do not accept this result. We would take measures to file objections to the Commissioner of Elections,” said the General.
Speaking further Gen. Fonseka said, “We extend our gratitude and admiration to all those who voted for us on the 26th. We regret that we were unable to fulfill their objectives. The government did not hold the election according to regulations. There had been mass scale rigging. We are 100% confident that election results have been distorted.”
Leaders of political parties that supported Gen. Fonseka too participated at the press conference.
Meanwhile, Asian election monitors are calling for a voter registration audit as claims by local elections monitors have called the election a fraud stating the counting of votes and disfranchisement of voters have taken place.
Foreign observer and Mission Director of the Asian Network for Free Election (ANFREL), Ichal Supriady has said that the accepted methodology of proving that the voter list is clean or dirty would be sorted by a voter registration audit.
A delegation of ANFREL election observers were in Sri Lanka on invitation by the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL).
