General Fonseka elected from Colombo

Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is currently leading the general elections for the seventh parliament with a total of 117 seats while the main opposition alliance United National Front has managed to secure 46 seats from 20 districts.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has received 12 seats and the Democratic National Alliance led by the detained former military chief retired General Sarath Fonseka secured five seats.

General Fonseka was elected to the seventh parliament from the Colombo District while his party managed to secure two seats from the Colombo District.

The results of the Kandy and Trincomalee Districts are yet to be released due to the malpractices at some polling booths in those two districts.

The Elections Department is to release the island wide results only after the re-polling in several centers in the Kandy and Trincomalee Districts.

The total number of seats to be won in the two districts amounts to 16 with 10 from the Kandy District and six from the Trincomalee District.

Results released so far by the Election Department indicate that the ruling UPFA has received 4.4 million votes, a 61 percent of the votes. The UNF has received 2.13 million votes- a percentage of 29.63 while the DNA received 5.8 percent of the votes amounting to 418,000.

Mchan this is not sure ....... Colombo page said SF amoung best loser getting only 20,465 votes

Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka Marxist People's Liberation Front (JVP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) failed to win a single seat in Matara district.

From the results released so far the NDA led by defeated presidential candidate retired General Sarath Fonseka received only 20,465 votes from the district amounting to a percentage of mere 6.25.

Mathura district in the Southern Province is one of JVP's major strongholds of the island. It is the home district founding leader of JVP, late Rohana Wijeweera.

Two JVP MPs, Premasiri Manage and Jinadasa Kithulegoda represented Matara district in the last parliament.

Ruling United People's Freedom Alliance won six seats out of the eight seats of the district while the major opposition United National Front (UNF) secured the other two seats.

Former Foreign Minister and the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party - People's Wing Mangala Samaraweera also contested under the UNF ticket from this district.

Preferential votes are still being counted.

    gud if sf dont get any votes coz he will be released now they dont have faults to show that man so they keep him cadged... Hero to zero

    SF ta mita wada diplomatic wenna tibuna ... rata pawadennagihin charter una but he played a very important role ... but wht missing was the real political leadership ... credits should go to MR ... Plus some more other vital factors as well ...SF you better leave the country Thank you for everything you have done for us
