General Fonseka elected from Colombo Apr 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is currently leading the general elections for the seventh parliament with a total of 117 seats while the main opposition alliance United National Front has managed to secure 46 seats from 20 districts. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has received 12 seats and the Democratic National Alliance led by the detained former military chief retired General Sarath Fonseka secured five seats. General Fonseka was elected to the seventh parliament from the Colombo District while his party managed to secure two seats from the Colombo District. The results of the Kandy and Trincomalee Districts are yet to be released due to the malpractices at some polling booths in those two districts. The Elections Department is to release the island wide results only after the re-polling in several centers in the Kandy and Trincomalee Districts. The total number of seats to be won in the two districts amounts to 16 with 10 from the Kandy District and six from the Trincomalee District. Results released so far by the Election Department indicate that the ruling UPFA has received 4.4 million votes, a 61 percent of the votes. The UNF has received 2.13 million votes- a percentage of 29.63 while the DNA received 5.8 percent of the votes amounting to 418,000.
