Melbourne: The contention that Adam Gilchrist's use of a squash ball inside his batting glove in the World Cup final was "unethical" has not found much support in Sri Lankan cricket circles, including ace spinner Mutthiah Muralitharan.

Gilchrist, whose record-breaking 149 led Australia to their fourth title, said later that he had a squash ball in one of his gloves to give him a better grip, prompting Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Kangadaran Mathivanan to describe the ploy as contrary to the spirit of cricket.

Mathivanan had compared it to Trevor Chappell's infamous underarm delivery in 1981.

"When Trevor and Greg (Chappell) decided to bowl underarm, it was allowed then, but later the ICC changed the law for One-Day cricket. It is the same here. It is against the spirit of the game. I think it should be looked at."

Mathivanan insisted several players had told him "they were a bit upset" over the use of the squash ball.

However, spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan distanced himself from the comments.

"That is (Mathivanan's) personal opinion. The team doesn't think that," he told Herald newspaper.

"If anything, I would think having a squash ball in your glove would be uncomfortable. I don't know if I could even hold a bat with something like that in my glove. So if (Gilchrist wants to do it), it is OK with me."

Mathivanan also received little support from SLC chief executive Duleep Mendis.

When asked if he supported his secretary, Mendis said: "You must call him about that."

I knew it. It is disgraceful to come up this issue within Sri Lanka. It will be like an excuse for the defeat in the finals.

If it didnt come up from Sri Lanka, there's no validity of the issue! It is Sri Lanka who should have made the intiative and am glad for the momentum of it now. And SL officials have taken the safest path unlike Paks (who disgraced theselves for acting in unpofessional way with England). In future, anybody can come up with any tactics finding loop holes in the books.

We should not let it go until we hear from all (including the final word from Mr. Gilchrist- He's said to been playing with a squash ball under-neath the glove for inter-state matches in Australia- .

Afterall, its only "whites" started calling "cricket is a gentleman's game".

Say we won the finals. Then we can always raise this question because there isn't the element of excuse in that claim. Gilchirst's tactic maybe is wrong, but we have to play carefully.

Something we have to do for the sake of playing cricket this long!

This is exactly why we should raise the question. We were made to think that way towards "suddah" through the colonisation. It is not an excuse. As a nation, cricket is something where Sri Lankans excel. We should see to it flourished & nourished.

Well, we know that and they know that we are a great team. But we are sounding desperate in our claim and this is in our disadvantage.

yea... if this SB thing really helps... our people should start using it.. not start complaining... and if it don't fit with cricket.. then it'll be banned or something like that...
