NO%20TAG.jpg

The Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga confirmed a short while ago that Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka has handed over a letter to the President’s office seeking to retire from his post. However Mr. Weeratunga refused to divulge the details of the letter saying it was confidential.

Citizen needs to look at the possible scenarios with open mind. MR is a strong leader so is SF. MR has shown some reluctance to govern ethically at times (failed to diciplne ministers and MPs at times due to best reasons known to him). If MR wins the next election, he probably will continue to govern the same way. SF right now may not be under any obligation to anyone, however if UNP attempts to use him as a pawn, the country will be back to square one. One does not have to be Einstine to see what's going on. SF will have his own political honeymoon, which UNP strogmen are aware of. Once, SF's political honeymoon is over, UNP will most likely sideline him and that is the danger.SF will never be able to govern the way he wants. UNP will up to it's own old tricks again when in power. Citizen will be looser again. Unfortunately, that's the reality and country will never be the same. It is only a dream to see Sri Lanka peaceful, corrupt free nation. Only corrupt free leader Sri Lank saw was Dudley Senanayake and nobody else. We will never see another leader in SL of Dudley calibre.

Good for him as he did a good job in the war and to realise its time to have a break. Thank you for your services and the deployment of the army to wipe out terrorists in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Fonseka: While I wish you all success I caution you on your willingness to become a mere RUBBER STAMP President like the one in our neighboring country. Dont you feel that Sri Lanka's newly earned enviable position in the global map will suffer a setback with the kind of lame-duck governance structure Ranil has in mind? What good did the PM-Cabinet governance structure did to the country during the Mayyokka-bathala age? Didnt the Executive Presidency open floodgates of goodness to SL over the past 30 years? Executive Presidency is the best form of governace if the President is a clean man. Dont you know that, on election, the UNP will adopt pro-Western stand that will irritate emerging sole Superpower China, which backed us to the hilt during the war? Will not Russia, which protected us at the UNSC, be unhappy over our tinkering with their geo-political strategies in South Asia? Why does Ranil, a rejected leader, wants to piggy-back you to PM post? Arent you ashamed to give a ride to a man who said Thoppigala was a patch of jungle, and undermined your position as Commander of the Army?

This is just the first wave of the political tsunami. Await larger waves next week. The good for nothing, idle Ministers must be shivering and breaking into cold sweats, especially " shorty" of Kelaniya fame. God Bless the General, the true war hero!

SF can be a good leader for a Army, but i have doubts whether he can be a good political leader with the current political setup of this country. Anyway if he is going to rule the country as a president, with his own ministers that will be a good option for his ruling style. But if UNP is just trying to use him to come in to the power, then it's a different story. Anyway I m sure if SF comes to the power, no one will be able to change the way of his ruling. He will take his own decisions to make this country a better place..but if he starts doing that i m sure these greedy politicians of both the parties UNP, PA will come together and protest to change the presidency.. because they will not be able to do all the corruptions and things that they used to do when they are in power.. But at this point to stop the corruption of this country there is no other alternative..PA..UNP both Sucks..and JVP the worst...i wonder how SF going to survive on this muddy political field...

It is a very sad news for the country as a whole. In these turbulent times every one should put country first and not self. We thank you for your contribution in winning the 30 year war but think of the country before you become a cats paw for some one, who has been rejected by the country, to achieve his ends and for you to become a 'nikama' thereafter. SF does not want Presidential rule for SL. His plan is to contest and if he wins he will abolish the presidency and resign. That is his game plan and we must support it as the likes of MR and gang are not suitable in a Presidential scenario.

All these comments are made with good intentions. But I think we should wait for the general to present his future plans.

Regardless of my agreement or disagreement, both candidates (MR & SF) will have same weapons. If SF is not a candidate, MR would use war victory for his and his party's advantages. Now there is a real competition to MR from SF. Where it will end, we have to wait and see.

My country had two problems.Terrorism and couruption. Our armed forces lead by SF stamped out the first, terrorism. What is left is courruption. The only man in the horizon of Sri Lankan political landscape, capable of delivering a courruption free country to all of us, and having the political will to do so, is undoubtedly SF. To do so he will have to change this constitution, that allows only the rich trying to be richer enter parliament and government, and appoint clever and patriotic people to assist him in the government. My belief is that SF is well motivated to do this and has the necessary drive and dynamism to achieve this goal. Ranil, or anyother not supporting this sincere effort of putting the country in the right path might be dumped in the dustbin of history.

Good luck and all the best to the good General whatever path he chooses. The county's needs among others stamping out bribery and corruption and good governance. If the General were to adopt these among his priorities, if he were to run for political office, the silent law abiding but helpless majority, will support you General. With funds lost to corruption, the Government could meet most trade unions' demands for higher wages. Hope you succeed and pursue these objectives with the same unflinching fortitude as you did the stamping of terrorism. LW

I think if SF can get rid of corruption, then that would be good for the country but will he be able to that? MR didn't give 100 odd cabinet posts because the ministers were all his relatives... What will happen to SF? Well, we will have to give him a chance and see, I guess.

We have to wait and see what the President has to say at the SLFP Convention on Sunday 15th November. He is a very smart man and we don't know what he has up his sleeves. Anyway whatever said and done we have to give him credit for not bowing down to to the Western countries with regard to the war against the LTTE. In any country corruption exists, we cannot do anything about that. As Sri Lankans let us unite together and hope for the best!!!!

Are we only left with choosing between the one who led a war and the one who executed it?

It is not UNP, JVP or JHU, any Tamil party who select the leader. It is the People. The leader's rule according to the wish of the People. Remember all crazy leaders were eliminated with a vote, guns, war or revolution. As a mature natation lets use vote.
