Sri Lanka Parliament today (December 18) passed the third reading of the 2008 Budget proposals with a majority of 47 votes. The Government obtained 114 votes while 67 voted against the Budget, and JVP MPs abstained from voting.
Defence.lk special correspondent at Parliament said, UPFA, UNP democratic team, JHU, CWC, EPDP, two MPs of SLMC and independent MPs Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka and Nandana Gunathilka have extended their support to the Government on the Budget.
Only 67 MPs have opposed the 2008 budget. The MPs of UNP, TNA, SLFP(M) wing, four MPs of SLMC, and the newts dissident of SLFP Anura Bandaranayeke voted against the budget. Meanwhile all the JVP MPs have abstained from voting.
Political and Defence observers claim that even though the scenario was speculative of a last minute surprise, due to the conspiracies of LTTE sympathizers and power hungry politicians; the government victory will give a boost to the security forces efforts to rid the country from terrorism. According to their view, had the government failed to win over the conspirators at the budget poll, the country's security may have flung into a great danger.
A senior defence observer told defence.lk that it was none other than terror chief V. Prabhakaran had the greatest want to see the government loose in the budget poll. Failure of the terror sympathizers and treacherous politicians is certainly a great victory of the all peace loving Sri Lankans, he added.
