Sri Lanka's opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe questioned the government as to how it planned to secure the European Union's tariff concession GSP+ while breaching privileges of Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader and parliamentarian General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka.
Wickremasinghe made this comment in parliament yesterday (06) during an uproar in the House when the opposition questioned the validity of the Export and Import Tax presented by the government yesterday.
"The European Union had emphasized on Human Rights violations in Sri Lanka and had put restoring those rights as a criteria to grant GSP+ and the government is trying to campaign for it while violating the rights of the retired general," he said.
The government said yesterday it is to send a high level delegation to Brussels later this month to negotiate the suspension of the GSP+ facility under which the Sri Lankan exporters get tax concessions in the European market.
