The SLMC seeks to initiate contact with the Organization of Islamic Countries on behalf of civilians in eastern Sri Lanka.

Aug 04, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) High Command met this morning to discuss the current situation in Muttur and other areas of the Trincomalee District. Party national leader Rauff Hakeem MP chaired the two and half hour session attended by senior members, MPs and provincial councilors.
The following are some of the resolutions that were adopted after the lengthy discussions:
“In the context of the fact that both the Government and the LTTE are engaged in fighting totally disregarding security of the civilian population, it is urged that the co-chairs to the donor countries should convene an urgent meeting to exert pressure on the two sides for immediate cessation of hostilities so that immediate humanitarian needs of the people could be provided. Representatives of the SLMC would meet resident representatives of the co-chairs for apprising them of the situation.
“The Government and the LTTE have brought about a situation where the Muslim population numbering over 40,000 is trapped in Muttur town where a fierce fighting is going on and they are unable either to get relief or to evacuate. The fact that all appeals for urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian population was repeatedly rejected by both the government and the LTTE should be brought to the notice of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) in a memorandum requesting the countries to exert diplomatic pressure for cessation of hostilities.
“Representatives of the SLMC will urgently meet the envoys of the Islamic Countries in Colombo to apprise them of the situation and to initiate measures through them for the international community to exert pressure on the government and the LTTE to end the fighting.” Low
