"Hate It or Love It" is the second official (third overall) single off of rapper The Game's debut album entitled The Documentary. The song was blocked from the #1 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart by The Game's fellow G-Unit member at the time, 50 Cent (who is also featured in this song), with his song "Candy Shop" (featuring Olivia), instead peaking at #2 in 2005, but it did reach the #1 spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The song was produced by Cool and Dre.

The track uses a sample from the song "Rubber Band" performed by The Trammps on their album, Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.

"Hate It or Love It" was nominated at the Grammy Awards of 2006 for both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, but lost both awards to Kanye West's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" and the Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk with My Heart", respectively.

In the first verse, 50 Cent says, "My favourite rapper use to sing ch-check out my melody", which "My Melody" was a song by rap duo Eric B. & Rakim from their debut album Paid in Full. The Game also mentions 2Pac and his song Brenda's Got a Baby in verse 3, saying: "Pac is gone, and Brenda still throwin babies in the garbage". He also mentions Lloyd Banks and Sha Money XL.

The music video's setting alternates between New York City and Los Angeles. The video showcases the rough childhoods of 50 Cent and The Game. It shows where they come from, what it was like living in their neighborhoods, and the struggles they overcame as kids to become rappers. Two kids portray them in their youth, and in one scene these two children are caught spraying "N.W.A." on a wall, causing their subsequent arrest by two policemen.

This video was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards of 2005 for Best Rap Video, but lost to the video for Ludacris' song "Number One Spot".
