try hdsentinel as well, it gives an estimate of how much lifetime the hard disk has left
might not be 100% accurate but will give you an idea of how much time you have left before hdd stops for good
the thing is no amount of software can save a physical defect and this is especially true for hard drives.if its failing take the warning signs and go for a new drive
btw are there any whining or clicking noises coming from the drive?
