    Heavy fighting in Puthukudiirippu; terrorists flee leaving behind their arms

    Intense fighting reported in general area Ampalavanpokkanai and Puthukkudiyiruppu, yesterday, 26 February, as troops of 58 Division further gained control over more LTTE hiding areas pushing LTTE terrorists further into Puthukkudiyiruppu built-up, military sources said.
    Infantrymen of 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (10 SLLI) serving under 581 Brigade have confronted with LTTE terrorists in general area Ampalavanpokkani in morning hours inflicting heavy damages to the enemy. Intercepting LTTE communication channels, it is further confirmed that terrorists suffered heavy losses.
    In subsequent search operations conducted in the area troops have found 2 bodies of LTTE terrorists killed during the fighting along with military items left behind by the fleeing terrorists. 8 x 81mm mortar booby traps, 35 x hand grenades, 1 x T-56 weapon and 1 x I-Com set were among the items uncovered.

    11 SLLI troops found a large quantity of LTTE arms and ammunition from west of Pudikudirippu yesterday, 26 February. LTTE terrorists unable to face the effective military thrust of the security forces fled that area leaving behind their arms and ammunition. The haul of weapons uncovered includes AP mines, claymore mines, bullet-proof jackets, LTTE camouflage kits, wire roles, RPG bombs and many other military items.
